Thursday Afternoon Hockey Talk

from Gord Stellick of CBC,
• Buffalo Sabre GM Darcy Regier acknowledged to me on a Hockey Night in Canada Radio interview that free agency has its drawbacks along with its positives. The Sabres were aggressive in adding the likes of Robyn Regeher, Christian Ehrhoff and Ville Leino with a new owner willing to open his wallet. The downside, as Regier and the Sabres soon found out was that it also through the appropriate pecking order of their team salaries out of whack. The newcomers were making more than Sabre holdovers that were more talented players.
That didn’t play well in the Sabre dressing room and was a significant reason for their struggles in the first half of the season.
• Wonder if Montreal Canadien fans would have a problem with a non-bilingual Kirk Muller as their head coach. Quietly, Muller has totally righted the ship in Carolina. A massive sell-off around the trade deadline never materialized as Muller got the most out of his Hurricane players. Eric Staal has had a tale of two seasons. After a horrendous start he is once again a dominant NHL forward. His streak of 10 consecutive games with at least one assist tied a franchise record that was held by the legendary Dave Keon (with the Hartford Whalers in 1979).

Afternoon Line

“My next step ultimately would be to break away from Getz and Pears. I think we’ve had chemistry. But at some point, you’re going to have to prepare for life after Teemu [Selanne]. I’d like to fill into that role and have that second line be built. I think I can step into Teemu’s role. I think I can put up 35 to 40 goals year in and year out.
“Personally on the ice, I’d like to be able to break games open a little more. Sometimes when I play with Getz and Pears, I get the feeling like I’ve got to be a secondary guy. The opportunities for me to break away from it and try to give us a secondary scoring option on another line, it’s working right now. When those guys [Selanne and Saku Koivu] leave, we have to build a second line. I’d like to do it around myself and be able to make adjustments to my game.”

Randy Carlyle Ready To Coach Again
by Paul on 02/11/12 at 11:31 PM ET

from Adam Kimelman of NHL.com,
“I have to make sure I’m ready and have an understanding of what’s going on in the League and there’s no better way than to have a presence in the buildings,” said Carlyle. “Just your presence in the building shows people you’re active and still out there and trying to stay current. That’s the message you want to send to everybody. It’s important. It’s important to meet people. In Anaheim, in the press box, I’ve probably met every general manager, every assistant general manager, every director of player personnel, all the pro scouts that go through the West that watch the hockey clubs out there—it’s all part of the process of keeping yourself current.”
His new perspective on the game has allowed him to gain some new perspective on what went wrong for him and the team this season. Carlyle went 283-182-61 in 516 regular-season games and 36-26 in 62 playoff contests. The Ducks made the playoffs five times in his six full seasons, including winning the 2007 Stanley Cup.
However, they were 7-13-4 and 14th in the Western Conference when he was let go Nov. 30.
Since then, Carlyle said he’s been doing “self-improvement” that he believes will help him in his next job.

Ducks Continue To Win
by Paul on 02/09/12 at 12:42 PM ET

from Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
Burnside: Greetings, my friend. Well, every day it seems the playoff picture in both conferences becomes murkier and murkier. And the Anaheim Ducks are doing little to clarify the situation by continuing to collect points at an alarming rate. Wednesday they knocked off Carolina in overtime, two days after besting Calgary in a shootout. In their past 15 games, the Ducks are 11-2-2 and, while they remain in 13th place in the Western Conference, they have pulled to within eight points of the eighth and final playoff spot….
LeBrun: I had a chance to catch up with Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau before the team departed for Detroit this morning. There’s definitely a buzz in the Ducks’ dressing room that something special could be happening, despite the long odds.
“There’s a sense of optimism, for sure,” Boudreau told ESPN.com.
“The guys are believing that it’s possible. If we ever get to within six or four points, it’ll be a real race.”
more plus some Phoenix, Calgary, Washington and Winnipeg talk…
