Talking Scouting
by Paul on 11/20/09 at 06:08 PM ET

from Evan Weiner at NHL.com,
One of the most overlooked front office jobs in hockey is that of a scout. The scout provides preliminary information on players, and his reports are the first to be analyzed by the personnel people.
There are different types of scouts. One might specialize in watching junior players and try to project what a 16- or 17-year old might become by the time he is 22, 23 or 24 years old. Other scouts, like Pete Mahovlich, ride around sections of North America looking at minor-league talent or taking in NHL games to evaluate players.
Mahovlich, now a pro scout for the Atlanta Thrashers, has been scouting talent for a long time after a very successful NHL career.

Survivor Rich Peverley

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
Peverley recalled the day last season when Nashville head coach Barry Trotz told him he was being put on waivers and that, assuming no other NHL team picked him up, he’d perhaps get his confidence back playing in the American Hockey League. Peverley and his wife drove around near the Nashville airport waiting for word on whether he was headed to another NHL team or hopping a plane to Milwaukee and the Preds’ AHL affiliate.
Atlanta GM Don Waddell, however, saw something in Peverley. It has turned out to be a boon for both the player, who recently signed a two-year contract extension worth a total of $2.6 million, and the franchise.
“Here, I get counted on to have some offensive production,” Peverley told ESPN.com this week, “and whenever you play a lot and play a lot of minutes, you’re going to develop a lot of confidence, and I just think that’s the case.”
The 27-year-old Guelph, Ontario, native said he understands how people may be waiting for the clock to strike midnight on his Cinderella-story emergence as an NHL scorer. But he’s determined not to go pumpkin any time soon.

Glue Or Stitches?
by Paul on 11/02/09 at 01:27 PM ET

from Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
The Thrashers forward had been hit with a stick during an early season game against Ottawa, opening a gash in his left eyebrow.
Armstrong had one question for the team’s trainer.
“Can you glue it?” he asked.
In some cases, glue can be used to close cuts that once would have required stitches. Depending on the location and depth of the cut, hockey players are often opting for a more elementary form of treatment.
“I didn’t want to have stitches because I really don’t like needles that much,” Armstrong said. “I saved myself a bunch of pain and anxiety.”

Pavelec Goes Old-School

My face would have been buried in my catching glove, but not Pavelec.
from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,
“I was scared a little bit. I felt like Jacques Plante 50 years ago,” said Pavelec, a 22-year-old from the Czech Republic who’s getting a shot with oft-injured Kari Lehtonen on the shelf again. Kovalev took the shot on a wraparound after Pavelec had had his mask knocked off in a scrum late in the second period. “I can tell you now it was not fun. A little scary, but it wasn’t a hard shot. I don’t think (Kovalev) could see (he had lost his mask). It wasn’t his fault. There was no blood.”
“I softened my hands,” said Kovalev, who saw the netminder was bare-faced.

Reports are circulating that Ilya Kovalchuk hurt his foot after taking a puck off of it, but as P.J. Stock pointed out on HNIC, it looked like he tweaked his knee or ankle on an innocent play in the corner.
He left in the first period and will not return.

Ovechkin Fined For Slew-Foot On Peverley
by Paul on 10/23/09 at 05:36 PM ET

from NHL.com,
NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations, Colin Campbell, has confirmed media reports that Capitals’ right wing Alex Ovechkin has been fined but will not be suspended for his slew foot of Atlanta’s Rich Peverley in the final minute of Washington’s 5-4 road victory on Thursday night. Ovechkin was whistled for a two-minute tripping penalty.
The fine comes one day after Anaheim’s Evgeni Artyukhin was suspended three games by the League for slew-footing defenseman Matt Niskanen of the Dallas Stars, though no penalty was called on the play. The Ducks’ right wing, who loses $34,756.11 in salary, will miss Saturday’s game against Columbus, Monday’s game against Toronto, and an Oct. 30 contest against Vancouver.
“It is unfair to draw any parallels [about the two slew-foot incidents] other than the players that [Ovechkin and Artyukhin] tripped both fell down,” Campbell told NHL.com

from Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Jounral-Constitution,
Goaltender Kari Lehtonen is no closer to returning to the Thrashers than he was soon after offseason back surgery.
According to Thrashers general manager Don Waddell, Lehtonen again experienced pain in his legs while rehabbing from July surgery to repair a herniated disc. He recently received another epidural injection to reduce inflammation, and he has stopped skating.
