Is Tonight Ovechkin’s Time?

from Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington,

Surrounded by cameras and microphones in a crowded visiting locker room, Ovechkin was asked if he believes tonight’s Game 7 is a stage for him to exhibit his greatness.

“Of course, you want to play hard and play well,” he said. “But the most important thing is to win. It can be the last game for both teams and I hope it’s going to be good luck for us and we can clinch and continue in the playoffs.”

OK, so Ovechkin wasn’t Mr. Definitive with that answer. And, truth be told, he has not been Mr. Dominant through the first six games of this wildly competitive series.

Through six games, Ovechkin leads the Capitals with five playoff points (two goals, three assists), 28 shots and 28 hits and is even on the plus-minus ledger while averaging 20:12 of ice time. By comparison, Sidney Crosby had three goals, five assists and was a minus-3 while averaging 20:36 in the Penguins’ six-game elimination by the Flyers.

Washington Plans To Be Physical Against The Bruins

from Katie Carrera of Capitals Insider,

Alzner suggested that Washington will try to ramp up its physical game in Game 7 in hopes of deterring some of the Bruins’ top-tier forwards, who appeared to wake up in Game 6, from emerging offensively once more.

“I think if we pick up that physical game a little bit, maybe we can get them out of that and make them shy away a little bit,” Alzner said. “It’s tough. They’re all extremely good, but you’ve got to try something to keep them quiet.”

Boston Plans To Rely On Game 7 Experience Tonight

from Joe Haggerty of CSNNE,

The Washington Capitals have done well in their first-round series against the reigning Stanley Cup champion Bruins, and they’ve proven the wise guys wrong by playing hard-nosed, playoff-style hockey.

The Caps and Bruins have battled through six one-goal games with the seventh and deciding matchup on tap Wednesday night – the first time in Stanley Cup playoff history that two teams have played six consecutive one-goal games. But Game 7 is what separates the men from the boys, and it’s something the B’s excelled at last year.

Boston players like Zdeno Chara and Tim Thomas had previously struggled in Game 7, but flipped that on its head last season as the Bruins became the only team in NHL history to post three Game 7 victories en route to winning the Cup.

There’s no secret to Game 7 success, as the Bruin players tell anybody who’ll listen. It simply comes down to confidence, poise and self-control under the greatest pressure cooker the NHL can concoct.

Afternoon Line

“For them to judge what knocks you down, they don’t know your balance or what not on the play.  They’re sitting at home watching on TV. I don’t really care what they say. They have no impact on my game, my life. They mean nothing.”

-Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins on his reputation of being a “diver”.  More on Boston/Washington from Katie Carrera of Capitals Insider.

NBC earned a 2.5 overnight Nielsen rating for the Bruins’ OT win over the Capitals yesterday in Game Six of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series, marking the best non-Stanley Cup Final game overnight in 14 years. The comparable Flyers-Sabres Game Six last year earned a 1.6 overnight. NBC also earned a 2.4 overnight for Flyers’ elimination of the Penguins in Game Six of their series. Ovechkin Doesn’t See Much Ice Time In The 3rd Period

from Corey Misisak of NHL.com,

One guy who was surprisingly missing for much of the third period as the Capitals tried to hold off the Bruins was captain Alex Ovechkin, who played only 1:58 in the period. Ovechkin took four shifts in the period, but played only 54 seconds in final 17:20 and only 15 seconds in the final 14:00.

Ovechkin played 15:03 in the first two periods—more than all of Washington’s skaters save for Mike Green, who was on ice for 15:25 through 40 minutes. The Capitals’ captain took a 64-second shift that ended 2:40 into the third, then his final three shifts lasted 39, two and 13 seconds….

Ovechkin wasn’t the only star player on the team to not play much in the third period. Green played only 3:24 in the final 20 minutes, while Alexander Semin logged only 3:03. But every Washington skater saw at least three minutes of ice time—except for Ovechkin.
