The Games Mean More Now

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,

Ville Leino has not had a good season with the Buffalo Sabres after signing a six-year, $27 million free-agent deal in the summer. He’s not doing himself any favours by saying he didn’t really try a lot earlier this year. “There’s so many games during the regular season that it’s sometimes tough to get excited. You’re obviously playing for a win, but now you’re playing for the big things, especially now that we need to win games. It’s our playoffs now, so everything counts: every shift, every stride, every pass, every shot. It’s exciting. You’re really playing for something, which doesn’t happen in Game 22 or 42 or whatever. But it’s exciting and I’m having a lot of fun out there. It’s a different vibe.” A lot of Sabres fans, I’m sure, would like to show him where to put his vibe.

Ryan Miller Not Happy With Gaustad Trade

frolm John Vogl of Sabres Edge,

Ryan Miller and Paul Gaustad are the closest of friends. They’ve been roomates. They’ve traveled through Europe together. They were teammates for a decade—a run that ended Monday when the Sabres sent Gaustad to Nashville.

Miller is not happy with the transaction.

“It was a pretty tough day,” Miller said today after practice in Anaheim Ice. “I’m not going to lie. I’m not real happy about the way it all turned out. But that’s the business of hockey.

“Like I’ve said, we don’t make those decisions. That’s more proof because if I had any more influence Paul would still be here. I appreciate the way he plays. He’s been one of my best friends for a long time there. Obviously, that’s going to continue, but it was nice to have him as a teammate and have those other intangibles.”

It’s All About Five Points

from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,

Five points was the difference between 11th place and eighth place in the Eastern Conference after the Sabres’ 2-1 shootout win over the Bruins on Friday night in First Niagara Center. Do the math, and it’s a few more victories for Buffalo and a few more losses for the teams ahead of them over 61 games.

Five points didn’t look like much with the NHL roaring into Turn Four and heading toward the finish line of the regular season. Anaheim had a miserable start but made up 16 points during a 23-game span in the Western Conference. The Sabres have made up five points and four conference spots over the past week, so another five over their final 21 games and a spot in the playoffs appears well within their grasp.

It’s nothing until you take a closer look and examine what needs to happen for them to wiggle through heavy traffic and come away without a dent while the others take turns crashing into the wall. And that’s when the five-point deficit in the standings starts looking like much more.

If The Sabres Make Gaustad Available

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

Now, it’s no sure thing that the Buffalo Sabres will move Gaustad, especially after another win last night, but if he is indeed made available before the Monday 3 p.m. ET deadline, here’s a list of teams—in no particular order—that I believe would be a good fit for him.

Detroit Red Wings: Gaustad would be just what the Wings need, adding a physical presence to their skilled forward set. Remember what the scout above said about putting him with speedier linemates? How about Darren Helm? That would be a good fit in my mind. The Wings are 20th on the PK and could use him there. I also think the Wings got pushed around a tad in back-to-back playoff exits to San Jose. Gaustad’s size would be welcome.

Vancouver Canucks: Like the Wings, the powerhouse Canucks could use a little more size and strength in their bottom-six group. The Canucks have few holes, if any, but a bigger forward for their third or fourth line would be a good addition. It’s why the Canucks also have interest in Travis Moen, although the Canadiens are telling teams they might not move him.
