Flames Finally Hear Some Cheers
by Paul on 03/20/10 at 08:26 AM ET

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
After weeks of consternation, peppered with catcalls and boos throughout many of their recent home dates, the Flames earned uproarious praise last night.
As part of the latest twist in the Flames seasonal drama, the lads were cheered off the ice after taking a 2-0 lead over San Jose into the first intermission.
After upping their lead to 4-1 in the second the masses broke into an unabashed “Go Flames Go.”
Just like old times — ya know, before the Slide n’ Purge of 2010.
The mood was such that the locals even threw a few fists in the air in support of “Pretend to be an NHL Team Night” at Rexall Place, where the Oilers’ early 2-0 lead over Detroit drew love. And hope.

Flames Need More Huge Wins

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,
They’re still outside the Western Conference’s elite eight, one point back of the Red Wings for the final playoff spot.
They still need to claim more “huge” wins — which is what seemingly every player called the 3-2 victory over Colorado.
Maybe as many as nine more over the final dozen remaining on the regular-season schedule.
If not, they’ll need help from other teams around the league.

Flames In An Uphill Battle
by Paul on 03/17/10 at 10:06 AM ET

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
Instead of taking advantage of home ice by moving ahead of the very team they’re chasing, the Flames are now three points back with 13 games to go.
And while that gap is by no means insurmountable, its evident momentum and the schedule are now both conspiring to work very much against Calgary down the stretch.
Not only are nine of their final games against playoff clubs ahead of them in the standings, four are early afternoon road affairs, which the Flames have long struggled with.
Perhaps more importantly, none are against the two teams they’re chasing — Detroit and Nashville — meaning they’re also at the mercy of two teams that control their own fate.

Detroit Fans, Did You Look At The Ref After This Goal?
by Paul on 03/16/10 at 12:17 PM ET

the first thing I looked for after this Datsyuk goal last night was the ref, making sure he wasn’t waving his arms and pointing at Holsmtrom.
Note that both Kipper and Homer gave a quick look too.

“I hope there’s guys disappointed in there. There had better be, because we found ways to lose two games here and we’ve got to find ways to win games.”

CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today their third jersey for the 2010-2011 season will be the Flames Vintage jersey. In celebration of the Flames 30th Anniversary season this vintage jersey was worn five times in games versus the other five Canadian teams.
The new third jersey for the 2010-2011 season will feature Vintage jersey striping and colours on the new innovative fabrics and cut that was introduced by Reebok for the 2007-2008 season. The Edge Uniform System was introduced to better complement today’s game and to help improve player performance.
Tonight’s game versus the Ottawa Senators at Pengrowth Saddledome will be the last time the Flames will wear the vintage jersey this season. At the conclusion of the game all players will give the Jerseys Off Their Backs to 24 lucky fans who have been randomly selected through seat locations on ice level.
The third jersey will be worn up to 15 games next season and will be available at all FanAttic locations at the beginning of the 2010-11 season.

A Battle For The 8th Spot In The West
by Paul on 03/09/10 at 06:36 AM ET

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,
A Flames win would vault them over the Red Wings, the defending conference champs and 2008 Stanley Cup winners, into eighth spot with the race to the playoffs nearing sprint time.
A Wings victory would put the Flames further back in the Wings’ rear-view mirror.
Is it pressure-packed? You bet.
But Flames head coach Brent Sutter is sending the message to his team to enjoy the tension.
“You want to be intense, but you’ve also got to enjoy what you’re doing. It’s like playoffs, and playoffs is a fun time, right?” Sutter said, as a half-dozen skaters went through the paces of an optional practice Monday afternoon. “All we did was move the calendar up
30 days. Let’s enjoy it and enjoy doing it.

Iginla Needs Help
by Paul on 03/06/10 at 10:40 PM ET

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,
Jarome Iginla has spent years carrying the Calgary Flames.
He can’t do it any more.
Not by himself.
Iginla still must remain a star player for the club while its flickering playoff hopes remain alive, but it’s become obvious he needs the supporting cast more than ever in order for the Flames to win on a regular basis.
As much as fans may want to believe the captain remains the same player who was so instrumental in the thrilling journey to the Stanley Cup final of 2004 and a trip to the playoffs every season after, Iginla can no longer be that player every night.
