Kiprusoff Wins Game #300 With Saves Like This

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,
Kiprusoff shone brightest in the final minutes of his 34-save outing, which included a highlight-reel stop in which he was on his stomach but able to catch a puck with his feet after it rolled down his back.
Talk about a great way to reach a milestone.
“It’s nice. I try not to think about it too much, but it’s there now. And that was a huge win for us,” he said. “It’s not the easiest building to win in, but it’s not a big thing for me it’s against San Jose.”

Feaster On The Delayed Clock Issue In Los Angeles

STATEMENT FROM FLAMES GENERAL MANAGER JAY FEASTER ON THE GAME CLOCK DELAY IN LOS ANGELES
Thursday, February 2, 2012 “It is our understanding the NHL is already investigating this matter. Moreover, as Colin Campbell was quoted as saying, once the game is over it is over. There is nothing the NHL is going to do, or can do, to correct the situation if, indeed, there was a mistake made in that game. Rather than crying over what happened in a game in which we did not take part, our time and energies are devoted to our own team and doing everything we can to win the games we play and in so doing qualify for the post-season. We sincerely believe that is a much better and more efficient use of our time and effort.”

Flames Trade Brendan Morrison To Chicago
by Paul on 01/27/12 at 09:17 PM ET

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today the acquisition of defenseman Brian Connelly from the Chicago Blackhawks organization in exchange for Brendan Morrison.
“As we projected our line-up going forward we felt it was going to be difficult for us to find a spot for Brendan or get him significant ice-time,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “Given his pending UFA status and the fact that we were not going to re-sign him, we felt it important to try to move him for another asset. In Brian Connelly we obtain a 25 year old highly skilled AHL All-Star defenseman who is still a legitimate prospect. We are excited to have Brian in the organization.”

Flames Hit A Sour Note Going Into All-Star Break

from George Johnson of the Calgary Herald,
Maybe his players weren’t prepared to barnstorm at the level required on the ice. But a distinctly dissatisfied Brent Sutter didn’t mind crashing the net with calculated abandon in the Ed Whalen Media Lounge afterwards.
“We weren’t good enough tonight,’’ he confessed with flat finality, the lack of zeal displayed in Tuesday’s 1-0 loss still gnawing at his innards like a five-alarm chili smothered in Tabasco.
“You play a second period like THAT? At THIS time of the year?
“We’re a team fighting to get into a playoff spot. You cannot have a second period like we played — we played the whole period in our own zone. For me it was disappointing. I was disappointed how we played here tonight, frankly . . . to be quite honest about it.
“It’s a 0-0 hockey game going into the third — you (should) find a way to win, even though you haven’t played very well up to that point.”

It’s The Battle Of Michigan Too

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Considering it’s a meeting between the Western Conference’s 11th and 14th place teams, it may be overstating matters to describe Saturday’s matchup between the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers as the Battle of Alberta. For now, call it the minor altercation of Alberta, which has a new oddball subtext, thanks to Calgary’s recent Mike Cammalleri acquisition.
The Flames now have three University of Michigan alumni on the roster - Cammalleri, plus the injured Brendan Morrison and David Moss. The Oilers, meanwhile, feature three of their arch rivals, former Michigan State stars Shawn Horcoff, Corey Potter and Jeff Petry. Maybe if no one’s paying attention locally, the TV numbers on Hockey Night In Canada can be bolstered by the overnights from the Windsor/Detroit area.
Still, rivalries - any kind of rivalries - always enhance match-ups and goodness knows, Calgary-Edmonton needs some enhancing these days, with the Oilers plunging fast, their top young players all injured, and all the early excitement of the season vanishing amid the hard reality of an 82-game schedule.

Should All OT No-Goal Decisions Be Reviewed?
by Paul on 01/18/12 at 06:58 PM ET

Of course, all goals are reviewed, but what about those that are ruled no goal by the on-ice officials?
Should the situation room make the final call?
from Dan Rusanowsky of The Chomp at the Sharks website,
Following a thrilling 2-1 shootout victory over the Calgary Flames on January 17th, the prevailing attitude overcoming the HP Pavilion crowd was one of relief. Yes, the Sharks should have won the game at 3:55 of overtime when a Justin Braun goal was incorrectly disallowed, but all’s well that ends well, right?
What if I told you that the difference between an overtime win and a shootout win is more than one less goal for Braun, one less assist for Joe Thornton and Tommy Wingels, and one less goal against for Miikka Kiprusoff? What if the difference between an overtime win and a shootout win could amount to millions of dollars for a franchise’s bottom line?
I’m sure that I have your attention now, but let’s review the entire situation before we get to the unintended consequences of the ruling. Under Rule 69.1, contact by an opposing player is what would constitute a referee’s decision to disallow the goal, and it is very specifically noted that such a decision is not reviewable by video replay, either on site or in the NHL War Room in Toronto.
The ruling was that in driving the net, Wingels made contact with Kiprusoff, but an overhead camera showed that the contact was with Calgary’s Olli Jokinen on the play. Jokinen was not directed by Wingels into Kiprusoff, although that may have been what the officials decided. In my own humble opinion, the wrong decision was unfortunately made, and there was no way to reverse it by video review.

Would The Flames Move Kiprusoff?
by Paul on 01/13/12 at 08:40 PM ET

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
Lost in the shuffle that brought Mike Cammalleri back to Calgary is the fact Calgary may just have landed Miikka Kiprusoff’s replacement as part of the six-man deal.
And if indeed Karri Ramo is as good as advertised, how soon will the Flames look to make the move many fans in the Sea of Red have long dreaded: The trading of No. 34?
After all, his no-movement clause expires this July.
While Cammalleri was certainly the primary player in the six-player swap with Montreal Thursday, Flames GM Jay Feaster wasted no time letting people know his European scouts were convinced the star goaltender of the Kontinental Hockey League’s Avangard Omsk is “the best goalie in Europe.”...
At age 35, Kiprusoff is still a workhorse and one of the league’s money goaltenders – a man who has been, without question, the Flames’ MVP this season. He has two-and-a-half more years left on his contract with the fifth-highest cap hit in the league at $5.8 million.
That said, his salary drops to $5 million next year and $1.5 million for the final year, making him an attractive acquisition for any team in need of a big-game goalie.

The Sutter Brothers Talk
by Paul on 01/11/12 at 10:14 AM ET

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
Those who expected the Sutter boys to hug it out or apologize to one another obviously never saw them play.
But in the quiet confines of their respective homes — far from the cameras and the microphones — Darryl and Brent Sutter did the next closest thing: They finally talked.
After more than a year of silence prompted by anger, frustration and personality clashes that dotted their working relationship as GM and head coach, respectively, while with the Calgary Flames, the two spoke Sunday night.
They didn’t discuss their differences, nor bury the hatchet, nor agree to disagree or dissect old wounds …
They just talked.
