Not The Way You Want To Lose A Game

from Razor With An Edge,

The new World’s Worst Way to Lose a Hockey Game is to outshoot the opponent 40-22, surrender the lead in the final minute, have a phantom delay of game penalty called on your defenseman in overtime and then allow the game winner on the ensuing 4 on 3 powerplay.

What a steaming, feces-encrusted way to decide a hockey game.

Sure refs are human and they make mistakes, but seriously!? If you watch the replay one of the two refs was just 5 or 6 feet away from Grossman when he allegedly shot the puck out of play from behind his own blueline. If the guy is so incompetent that he can’t make a proper judgment on a play like that - a call that could potentially decide the game – then he probably should be in a different vocation.

Do remember a delay of game can be called from anywhere on the ice, not just from the defensive zone.  In this instance, I think the refs just missed the call, since I don’t think Grossman deliberately shot the puck out of play.

The Flames & Their H1N1 Flu Shots

Many of you know I listen to Canadian radio stations via the web, and this story is the ‘talk’ today…

from Bill Kaufmann of the Calgary Sun,

The Calgary Flames did nothing underhanded to procure H1N1 vaccinations in the past week ahead of thousands of high-risk Albertans, club president Ken King said yesterday.

But despite that claim from the team, the province has launched an investigation into what officials say shouldn’t have happened.

While King acknowledged a team doctor and the physician’s nurse wife might have been a “point of contact” in seeking the vaccine which is in short supply in the province, King said nothing was done outside Alberta Health Services (AHS) auspices.

“I’m happy to confirm we would not have taken an illicit process,” said King.

Hey, No Cuts In Line

from Wes Gilbertson of Sun Media,

The Calgary Flames reportedly jumped the queue for H1N1 vaccinations, and that has some members of the Sea of Red seeing red.

The Flames received their shots Friday, one day before the province temporarily shut down clinics, saying they would eventually reopen but only be available to high-risk Albertans.

“I’m hearing from people,” said Flames CEO Ken King.

“I’m hearing from fans this morning and I intend to speak with them and try to help them understand why we would make a decision and what criteria under which we made that decision and again explain to them that we ... appreciate that not everyone will agree.”

Flames Get Down & Dirty In Practice Session

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,

Tossing the puck towards the faceoff dot like a lion tamer would hurl raw meat, Brent Sutter ordered two of his most ferocious beasts to do battle.

With players lined up along the centre ice circle to provide a makeshift cage, Dion Phaneuf and Brian McGrattan were summoned to the middle where they collided with considerable force.

With instructions to simply fight for the puck, the two scraped and clawed while Sutter barked at them three times to “battle.”

Following a series of violent cross-checks to one another’s backs, their 30-second war had ended with McGrattan doubled over in exhaustion and Phaneuf checking his beak for blood.

Without hesitation another puck was hurled into the circle for another two teammates to clash over....

After squandering leads in consecutive home losses, Sutter followed up a day off with the type of practice yesterday that was, quite frankly, three or four years overdue for the Flames.

The First Month Of The Flames Season

from Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun,

THE GOOD

If Kiprusoff isn’t the team’s most valuable player for the opening month, it’s Rene Bourque.

Sniping five goals and 15 points over the first dozen games, the Lac La Biche product has easily been the Flames’ most dominant forward so far this season. He’s driving pucks to the net, throwing his weight around, and is a constant threat to score with a man-advantage or while shorthanded....

THE BAD

Iginla and Jokinen were expected to be a dynamic duo in their first full season together on the top line.

Now, they’re not even together.

Split up after failing to find chemistry as a tandem, and struggling to fit into Brent Sutter’s system as individuals, they haven’t shown signs of being the team’s best players.

Great Offensive Play Or Bad Defense?

via Vicki Hall of Flames Insider,

The one-man show by Wojtek Wolski — skating right in the middle of Nigel Dawes and Daymond Langkow, waltzing unmolested into the slot and firing the puck past Miikka Kiprusoff — could be shown as a “What Not to Do” video in hockey school.

“The third goal we gave up was a terrible goal to give up,” Sutter said. “I mean, everyone is standing around the ice watching someone walk into the slot and shoot the puck.

“It’s not a very good play by anybody who was on the ice.”

Flames Will Need Goals From Jokinen

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

Dating back into last season, Jokinen has scored just once in his last 23 regular-season games – not enough for a player that averaged 37 goals in each of his final three years with the Florida Panthers and was acquired by Calgary at last year’s trade deadline to provide goals.

Of course, the difference between Jokinen then and Jokinen now is evident in his shots-on-goal total. In those three years in Florida, Jokinen took 351, 351 and 341 shots respectively. Last year, split between Phoenix and Calgary, his shots plunged by more than 100 (to 236) and this year, it’s even worse. Through 10 games, he had only 17 shots in total, or about what Alex Ovechkin manages every two games.

Another Flu Victim

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

On the morning of tonight’s pivotal date with the league-leading Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames centre Dustin Boyd was nowhere to be found, the latest NHL player to come down with the flu – and forced into isolation from his teammates.

This, of course, goes against the normal NHL ethic – that a player, injured or felled by an illness, attempt to play unless he is absolutely bed-ridden.

“That’s a little bit more of the old-school thinking that goes along with coaches who’ve been around for a long time,” agreed Flames’ defenceman Robyn Regehr. “For us as players, though, we don’t want guys who are sick around because even it’s one guy, he can affect the group – 20 or 22 guys.

Misleading Stats

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,

Talk about numbers not telling the story.

Yes, it’s true Kiprusoff has only once surrendered two or fewer goals this season. Curiously, it was in a 2-1 defeat.

Yes, he has a goals-against average of 3.23 and a .902 save percentage.

Those are facts.

But to say he’s been struggling is dead wrong.

Through the first 10-game segment of the season, which concludes with tomorrow night’s clash against the Edmonton Oilers, Kiprusoff has been the club’s MVP.

Iginla Back On The Offensive

from George Johnson of the Calgary Herald,

Sauntering down the press box with six and a half minutes remaining, the injured Mike Commodore glanced up from fiddling with his BlackBerry, spotting a familiar face tapping tentatively on a laptop.

“Hey, how’s it going?’’ asked the long-ago local folk hero, his trademark red fright wig/afro shorn fashionably short.

A noncommital shrug.

“Not bad. Same old.’’

“Yeah, I hear you,’’ replied the former Calgary Flame. “Same old . . . ’’

He shook his head, glanced heavenwards, in knowing resignation.

“Same old Jarome.’’

Yup, same old Jarome. At last.
