via Chip Alexander of the News & Observer,
Canes center Eric Staal will miss some games because of an upper-body injury suffered Sunday against the San Jose Sharks, general manager Jim Rutherford said today.
Staal has played in 349 consecutive regular-season games, but that streak will end, Rutherford said. He has missed just one game in his career, late in his rookie season.

Rutherford Will Try To Fix Canes

from Paul Branecky of CarolinaHurricanes.com,
Rutherford indicated he would like to make changes to his team, but acknowledged that would be difficult given the early stage of the season. Teams looking to add players take on a bigger financial responsibility now than they would at the trade deadline, and many don’t have substantial cap space following recent off-season signings.
One direction Rutherford may take is giving more responsibility to the team’s talented young players in Albany, such as Drayson Bowman and Zach Boychuk, who have hovered around a point-per-game pace in their first full professional season at the AHL level.
“If we can move certain players, then we can start to transition into the team that we felt we would transition into next year,” said Rutherford. “We do have a lot of good young players now, and I’m not sure that they’re 100 percent ready to play here, but if we’re not going to win with a veteran team then we may as well transition sooner rather than later.”

What’s Wrong With Carolina?
by Paul on 11/01/09 at 05:59 PM ET

from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer,
In the winter of 2003, after a dismal six-goal loss to the Los Angeles Kings, the Carolina Hurricanes reached the inevitable conclusion that no matter how hard anyone tried or what anyone did, their season was only getting worse. And it proceeded to get worse, all the way to last place.
Is it possible the Hurricanes have reached that point on the first day of November, after a dismal four-goal loss to another West Coast team? After all, this is the first time the Hurricanes have gone nine games without a win since then.
This team doesn’t have the injury problems or overwhelming lack of interest the 2002-03 team developed as it slid down the standings, but it also doesn’t have a whole lot of answers, either.

from Chip Alexander of the News & Observer,
Canes forward Tuomo Ruutu said today that he has called Darcy Tucker of the Colorado Avalanche and apologized for the hit from behind that left Tucker with a concussion.
Ruutu was suspended for three games by the NHL for the hit in Friday’s game in Denver.
“It was a bad hit by me,” Ruutu said. “I wasn’t really worried about the suspension. I was worried about the guy.
“It looked pretty bad. It just happened. I think he’s doing better. I’m so sorry about what happened but everything happened so quickly.
“I wish I could get it back but I can’t.”

Ruutu received 5 minutes for boarding along with a 10 and game misconduct.
from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,
...it seems like Darcy Tucker escaped potentially catastrophic injury tonight. After being taken from the ice on a stretcher from Tuomo Ruutu’s hit from behind, eyewitnesses said later tonight that Tucker walked out of the Pepsi Center. He was on his way to the hospital for further tests, but Avs personnel told me Tucker appears to have “escaped” with a concussion and stitches to the head.
added 11:40am, According to Ben Hankinson, Ruutu receives a 3 game suspension.

Erik Cole Out With Fractured Leg

from the Carolina Hurricanes,
Tests today revealed that Erik Cole suffered a fracture in his lower left leg from last night’s collision with Boston’s Dennis Wideman and will miss 4-6 weeks of game action.
Not exactly what the Canes wanted to hear after an 0-2 start to the season, and certainly some added injury to the insult of the lopsided loss in Boston. A little more adversity than the team had hoped for by the third game of the season, but they’ve had to overcome similar circumstances in the past. Cole had missed Sunday’s practice with the injury, with Tuomo Ruutu moving to Eric Staal’s wing.

from Mary Caton of the Windsor Star,
Located near the player’s entrance, the party swells to as many as 60 at times and they’ve enjoyed drop-in visits from members of the Detroit Tigers’ baseball team, golfer Jack Nicklaus and numerous U of M alumni.
Persichilli gives full credit for their strategic locale to fellow U of M grad and Wind-sor native, Aaron Ward.
An NHL veteran now playing for the Carolina Hurricanes, Ward is Erica’s cousin.
While hockey doesn’t allow Ward to particpate in many pigskin parties at the moment, he plans to grill hot dogs and sausages right alongside Persichilli when he retires.
“He’s the one who got us to the location we’re at now,” Persichilli said. “We owe it to him.”
