Can We Talk Goaltending?

In this salary cap world, when a team feels they have a legitimate shot at winning the Stanley Cup, they sgo for it and go for it hard.

Three teams that have this shot are Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington.

Aaron Ward To Ducks

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired defenseman Aaron Ward from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for goaltender Justin Pogge and a fourth-round selection in either the 2010 or 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The fourth-round pick from Anaheim was acquired yesterday from Boston in exchange for defenseman Steven Kampfer.

“Aaron Ward brings valuable experience and is a proven winner with three Stanley Cup championships,” said Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. “We are pleased to bring him on board.”

Cam Ward May Return This Season

While saying there is no set timetable for a return, Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said today that goaltender Cam Ward could be back in net this season.

Ward, sidelined since Feb. 3 with a back problem, returned to a back specialist in Charlotte this week. Rutherford said surgery will not be required.

“We’re real encouraged with the progress he’s making,” Rutherford said. “He has been feeling much better in the last week. We’ll see where he is in the next week or two.

Matt Cullen To Ottawa

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has traded center Matt Cullen to the Ottawa Senators. In exchange for Cullen, the Hurricanes will receive defenseman Alexandre Picard and Ottawa’s second-round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

“Alexandre is a good, young defenseman who should become a regular part of the Hurricanes’ blue line,” said Rutherford. “We wish Matt all the best, and thank him for his many years here in Carolina.”

Six Teams Head To Europe Next Season

A record six teams will be opening next season in three different European cities.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild will play two regular-season games against each other at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland, on Thursday, Oct. 7 and Friday, Oct. 8.

The Columbus Blue Jackets and San Jose Sharks will square off for two games at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden, on Friday, Oct. 8 and Saturday, Oct. 9.

The Boston Bruins and Phoenix Coyotes will play each other at O2 Arena in Prague, Czech Republic, on Saturday, Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 10.
