High Asking Price For Ruutu

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

General manager Jim Rutherford has been talking to teams about Ruutu (who is an unrestricted free agent this summer) and the asking price has been steep - a significant draft pick and a solid prospect or a top prospect alone. Ruuttu has the ability to both score goals and play a physical game, so a lot of teams have interest - including the Vancouver Canucks, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers amongst others.

The Rangers, for example, figure Ruutu is just the type of Top 9 forward that could play coach John Tortorella’s demanding style.

Two questions, though.

Will teams pay that price?

And more importantly, is Ruutu actually available? That will be determined this week when Rutherford decides whether to give him the ‘Tim Gleason treatment.’

Carolina Extends Gleason

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Tim Gleason to a four-year contract extension. The deal will pay Gleason $3.5 million in 2012-13, $4.5 million in 2013-14 and 2014-15 and $3.5 million in 2015-16.

“We thank Tim for choosing to stay with the Hurricanes long term,” said Rutherford. “He is one of our core players, someone who brings character and leadership to our locker room, along with being a key piece on the ice. This is a very important signing for our team going forward.”

Gleason, 29, is in his eighth NHL season and sixth with the Hurricanes, and currently leads all Hurricanes defensemen in hits (87), plus/minus (+2) and total minutes played (1,063). He ranks second among Carolina blueliners in assists (13) and penalty minutes (44), and third in points (14), skating in all 51 games for the team this season.

Ponikarovsky Traded To The Devils

from Chip Alexander of Canes Now,

The trade deadline is still a month away, but the Carolina Hurricanes picked up a draft pick and cleared one of their expiring contracts off the books Friday night.

After a 3-0 win over the Washington Capitals, the Canes traded forward Alexei Ponikarovsky to the New Jersey Devils for a fourth-round draft pick in 2012 and minor-league defenseman Joe Sova.

Play Bryzgalov & Who Want Tuomo Ruutu

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

• I know the Philadelphia Flyers aren’t thrilled with Ilya Bryzgalov — they think he talks too much, and his stats are certainly far from $10 million a year worthy (3.07 goals-against average, .891 save percentage) — but did they not do their due diligence. Bryzgalov is off-the-wall; he’s a character. He is who he is (he was one of the stars on the 24-7 HBO show), and now the Flyers want to limit him to two-minute sound bites with the media. He is not worth that kind of dough (who is?), but he’s a good goalie. He has only played four games since Christmas. Ride him, like the Coyotes did, even if one New York Rangers player said “it looks like he’s fighting every shot, a sure sign of a guy with no confidence.” You can’t decide now you like backup Sergei Bobrovsky more.

• You can put Tuomo Ruutu at the top of most general managers’ lists as a rental at the trade deadline. He’s hard on the puck and he’d be a solid second to third liner on a contender. The Pittsburgh Penguins could use him. Heck, Pittsburgh could use just about anybody now with their falling bodies. He’d look good with the Nashville Predators, too.

Canes Activate Skinner

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has activated forward Jeff Skinner from injured reserve. Skinner, who has missed Carolina’s last 16 games with a concussion, is eligible to play in tonight’s game against the Capitals in Washington.

Skinner, 19, currently ranks second among Hurricanes skaters in goals (12) and third in points (24). Prior to suffering a concussion against the Edmonton Oilers on Dec. 7, the Markham, Ont., native had not missed a game in his NHL career. Carolina’s first-round draft pick (7th overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Skinner has totaled 43 goals and 44 assists (87 points) in 112 career NHL games with the Hurricanes. He won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year after leading all rookies in points (63) during his first NHL season in 2010-11.

Jeff Skinner Closing-In On Return

from Chip Alexander of the News & Observer,

The Hurricanes would like to get Skinner back for tonight’s game against Tampa Bay (7:30 p.m., FSCR), but his first game back is more likely to come after a few more contact practices, possibly Sunday on the road against the Washington Capitals

Skinner, sidelined more than a month with a concussion, has been given medical clearance for contact and was no longer wearing the yellow, no-contact jersey Wednesday at practice.

“Obviously it’s not up to me,” Skinner said Wednesday. “The doctors, the trainers, the coaching staff will make the decision for me, so I guess the pressure is off me in that way. I’m ready to get back on the bench.”

Skinner was the Hurricanes’ top scorer when he took a big hit from Andy Sutton of the Edmonton Oilers in a Dec. 7 road game. That was Kirk Muller’s fifth game as Canes coach, and Carolina is 5-6-3 - and often has struggled to score - since Skinner went out.
