Trade Patrick Kane?
by Paul on 04/25/12 at 11:50 AM ET

from Steve Rosenbloom of the Chicago Tribune,
But since the Cup winner, Kane has scored one goal in his last 13 playoff games.
Maybe Kane becomes that kind of player again. Maybe he becomes a big-time goal-scorer if the Hawks bring in that No. 2 center.
Or maybe Kane brings that dangerous second-line center in return.
It would be worth boycotting the team if the Hawks hockey operations department wanted to trade Kane but couldn’t because the marketing wonks have made him and Toews the faces of the franchise.
I know the Hawks are big on marketing and branding, but when the hucksters in a hockey organ-I-zation dictate to the hockey people in a hockey organ-I-zation, it’s over. You’re dead. Welcome to Loserville. That’s thumbsucker stuff. That’s the old Cubs blueprint, or even the new Cubs blueprint. Isn’t that right, Kerry Wood?
I’m not saying that would be the case, just that it had better not be. Look, here’s the deal: Hawks fans deserve more, certainly more than an increase in season-ticket prices. I presume “One Goal’’ remains the point. I also presume Kane shouldn’t be outscored by an ad campaign.

Chicago Needs To Answer Some Questions
by Paul on 04/24/12 at 10:24 AM ET

from Steve Rosenbloom of the Chicago Tribune,
The Hawks have some hard questions to answer now. Can they trust Corey Crawford? Do they have four defensemen worthy of being considered top four? How good are their best players, after all? How good are they when they need to be good? Is Stan Bowman the right man to answer those questions correctly?
The Hawks were built on skating and a puck-possession game. The Hawks’ pretty, shiny things are faster and have more top-end offensive skill than the Coyotes, even without injured Marian Hossa.
And yet, the Coyotes are moving on and the Hawks haven’t won a playoff series since winning the Stanley Cup.
The Hawks’ best players didn’t show up. Someone named Gilbert Brule had more goals than Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp. Combined.
Antoine Vermette, a second-line center the Hawks didn’t trade for, had twice as many goals as Toews, the Hawks’ first-line center. Heck, some guy named Mikkel Boedker had as many as the Hawks captain. And so it went.

The Coyotes defeated the Blackhawks 4-0 and the only goal needed by Phoenix was this power play blast from Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
Without a doubt, Mike Smith was the difference, particularly early in the game. In the first period, he stopped 16 shots while Phoenix could only manage 2 on Corey Crawford.
The Coyotes will now host the Nashville Predators in games 1 and 2, while the St. Louis Blues will be welcoming the LA Kings for the first two games of the Western Conference Semi-Finals.

NEW YORK (April 19, 2012)—Chicago Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville has been fined $10,000 for public comments critical of the officiating in Game 3 of the Western Conference Quarterfinal series against the Phoenix Coyotes Tuesday night in Chicago, the National Hockey League announced today.
The fine money goes to the NHL Foundation.

Emanuel Kuvakos, 56, was arrested Tuesday night and charged with three counts of misdemeanor harassment by electronic means, police said.
Kuvakos sent “a number’’ of emails to Blackhawks CEO John McDonough and to Jim Hendry, the former general manager of the Chicago Cubs, that accused them of “stealing his ideas to win championships,’’ according to a police report.
On Saturday, he sent them another email stating that he would keep the Blackhawks from winning the Stanley Cup, police said.
While being interviewed by authorities, he claimed he also sent a message to Rocky Wirtz, the Blackhawks owner, which saying that if he ever saw Wirtz, he would beat him, according to the police report.

What Is The Difference Between Perception And Misperception?
by Paul on 04/18/12 at 11:12 AM ET
Comments (11)
from David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune,
This was a sin so egregious Shanahan, the NHL senior vice president of player safety, will have no choice but to act swiftly to suspend Torres, right Commissioner Bettman?
“You’re asking me to prejudge something,’’ Bettman answered. “I’m certain it was observed by hockey operations and in particular player safety and to the extent it requires review or action, they will do it. But let’s not jump the gun.’‘
Bettman believes too many people have done just that during an ugly postseason when the quantity of scuffles has overshadowed the quality of play. Where I see a dangerous trend, Bettman sees tradition, citing the rough-and-tumble game he heard old-timers reminiscing about on the radio.
“A lot of it is perception and misperception,’’ Bettman said. “The game is physical, the game is emotional. These games are hard-fought. Having said that, I’d say player safety is monitored closely and being dealt with in an appropriate way.’‘
When I mentioned that the league had been inconsistent with penalties — contrasting Shaw’s three-game suspension with Predators defenseman Shea Weber’s $2,500 fine for slamming Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg’s head into the glass — Bettman scoffed.
