Questioning Joe Sacco

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

I’m not a major second-guessing-of-the-coach kind of guy. I tend to be harder on the actual players on the ice, and those in management who make the final decisions on what players are on their team. Coaches, to me, are guys who get too much credit when things go well for their team, and too much blame when things go bad.

But I’m officially on board tonight with questioning the recent decisions of Joe Sacco as Avalanche coach. Frankly, I think his lineup decisions for tonight’s game with Nashville made no sense, and perhaps played a role in what is now an ignominious new team record for consecutive losses in a season – seven.

Forsberg Returns

from Adrian Dater of the Denver Post,

After nearly three years since playing his last NHL game, Peter Forsberg will be back in the lineup tonight for the Avalanche.

Forsberg will skate at left wing on a line with Matt Duchene and Milan Hejduk in tonight’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“I’m excited — and nervous,” Forsberg said, after taking part in the morning skate with teammates at Nationwide Arena. “I don’t know how it’s going to go, but I’m going to be skating with two great players, so hopefully they can help me out a little bit out there.”

Craig Anderson Takes A Personal Leave

via Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson has returned to Denver tonight, for personal reasons. While he is away from the team, veteran John Grahame will be with the team and serve as backup to Peter Budaj.
Grahame, along with D-man Jonas Holos, were called up a little bit ago from Lake Erie.

Looks like it’s just going to be one of those years. I’m not going to speculate the reason why Anderson is taking a leave, even though I believe I have an idea. He’s not hurt and I believe this is only going to be a day-to-day thing. He wasn’t going to start tomorrow anyway. So let’s not make a big deal of it.

Even pro athletes deserve a little privacy. And like I said, I’m not positive what it is, so for now that’s the reason he’s gone – personal.

What’s Wrong With Colorado?

The Avalanche have lost five in a row and sit 14th in the Western Conference.

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

The Avs’ lack of fire and intensity defensively has spread through the entire team. They are entirely too easy to play against, 1 though 18, almost every single night now. Somehow, this team got soft again. They’re letting teams just waltz into their zone, never laying a big hit on anyone along the way, not ganging around the puck, not making every single inch of ice hard to gain like they should – and like they did for good stretches of last season.

The forwards are just plain lazy right now in front two-thirds of the ice defensively. Where is the speed, where is the fiery agitation from TJ Galiardi these days? Why is Ryan O’Reilly so passive on the penalty kill now?

Afternoon Line

The stage is set for Cinderella, as the youthful Avs have fallen on hard times and fallen out of the Western Conference playoff bracket (1-5-0 in their past six games). They have been outscored 27-11 over that period and rank 29th in goals allowed per game. Forsberg doesn’t play goal, so he won’t help in that regard, but his leadership in a room that seems to have come unglued cannot be underestimated. If Forsberg can still play, that is.

Forsberg Signing With Avalanche

via Adrian Dater of the Denver Post,

Peter Forsberg’s answer is yes.

Forsberg, the longtime Avalanche star, has decided to play for the Avs and is expected to sign a contract today and travel with the team to Phoenix.

Forsberg took part in today’s practice with the team, then announced he will play with the team. He is not expected to play tomorrow in Phoenix, however.

added 1:27pm,

Forsberg = Favre?

from Jason Brough of Olrand KurtenBlog,

Let’s get back to the article in question, which starts out by saying how the NFL is more popular than the NHL. And I have no problem with that - the NFL is more popular than the NHL

But then comes this part:

North American hockey has many reasons to look up to its pigskin counterpart, but something the league doesn’t need is a joke similar to the one a certain crocs-wearing quarterback has unleashed offseason after offseason in the NFL.

The league is close to having its own Brett Favre in the form of 37-year-old Peter Forsberg, a massively talented player that could be remembered as one of the all-time greats but refuses to acknowledge his days of skating with the big boys are over.

Will Craig Anderson Carry The Avs?

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

Heading into the final year of his contract, Anderson said he and the Avs talked a bit before the season but haven’t talked since.

In hindsight and given the numbers Anderson has put up, it looks like GM Greg Sherman did the right thing by not offering Anderson a long-term extension. But the team’s uneven defensive play and soft goaltending has put them in a precarious position vis a vis making the playoffs. That has put pressure on Sherman to upgrade the goaltending to keep the Avs in the hunt and likewise upped the ante on Anderson to prove he’s still the man.

Sherman insisted in a recent interview he was happy with his goaltending tandem, but really, what else is he going to say?

Regardless of who is manning the twine, it is safe to say the Avs will need better goaltending if they are going to make the playoffs this year.

Maybe it will be Anderson that provides that goaltending. He has shown he can do it, of course, but can he do it again?

Afternoon Line

“If I had to make a decision today, it wouldn’t be that positive, because (the pace of play) was quick.  I’ve just got to keep skating for the next couple of days, and then make a decision very quick.  I’ve just got to keep on working. It’s hard to make a decision after just three (full) practices. I’ve got to keep on skating and see how close I can get.”

-Peter Forsberg, who has been practicing with the Colorado Avalanche.  More from Adrian Dater of the Denver Post.
