Stastny Out With Stress Fracture To His Leg

DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that forward Paul Stastny will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season due to a leg injury.
“Further examination revealed a stress fracture in his leg,” said Avalanche team physician Dr. Andrew Parker. “At this time, the decision was made to shut him down for the rest of the regular season.”
Stastny, 25, ranks second on the Avalanche in scoring with 57 points (22g/35a) in 74 games. He leads the club in faceoff percentage (53.1%) and ranks first among all Avs forwards in ice time at 19:44 per game. Stastny made his first career appearance at the NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 30 in Carolina, tallying a goal and one assist.

What Do You Think Vancouver Fans?

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,
We all know the Avs are going to get a lottery pick. Based on the current standings – they’re 29th, and likely to stay there – they could get no worse than the third pick overall in June. They could well get the first or second picks by finishing 29th too.
Should the Avs put that pick on the market for top young goalie prospect? Say, a guy like Cory Schneider in Vancouver or a Jonathan Bernier in Los Angeles? If the Canucks and Kings didn’t want to part with those two, would they part with Roberto Luongo and Jonathan Quick instead?
Would the Avs rather hold on to the pick and wait a while before they blossom as players, or do they give it up for something more immediate in the area they need it most?
I don’t know, I could go either way on this. To me, if you could get Schneider with the pick, I might just do it. Luongo? Yeah he’s 32 and had some disappointing playoff runs, but he’s still Roberto Luongo. I’m sure he has a no move/no trade deal, but players almost always waive them when they know they’re not wanted.

Sakic Joins Avalanche Front Office

DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that Joe Sakic has been named Executive Advisor/Alternate Governor of the Avalanche. He will begin his new position at the end of the 2010-11 regular season.
Sakic, 41, will serve as an executive advisor regarding all facets of hockey operations. He will also be involved in the business side and will represent the Avalanche at the Board of Governors Meetings as one of the Alternate Governors.
“I feel that now is the time for this new challenge,” said Sakic. “Two years after retiring from the game of hockey, and having had the opportunity to attend the Board of Governors Meeting, I feel excited about getting involved more with the organization. The fact that the Avalanche is giving me this opportunity shows how much they trust my background and hockey experience. I look forward to this new expanded role with the franchise.”
“The fact that Joe Sakic has decided to come on board on all facets of hockey operations is exciting news for us and all of our fans,” said Avalanche Governor Josh Kroenke.

Split the Standings: The First 41 vs. Games 42-Now
by Jon Jordan on 03/23/11 at 10:49 AM ET

Splitting the first half of a season from the second and comparing the two is about as useless, at the end of the day, as useless statistics get. Point being, the only thing that matters at the end of the year is the bottom line of 16 teams qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs and 14 others following along like the rest of us.
But useless doesn’t mean uninteresting as we peek at the difference in the standings from the 41-game mark for each team until now.
Have a look, after the jump:

Battle For The Bottom Spot

from Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal,
When the curtain finally falls on the Edmonton Oilers season, will it matter much if the team is parked in 30th place or if it manages to climb to 29th. Or maybe even 28th?
Depends who you ask.
“We don’t want to finish dead last. Nobody does,” said Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk.
“At some point, it’s just playoff teams and non-playoff teams,” winger Ryan Jones said. “The team that misses the playoffs through a tie break, or by one point, is in the same position we’re in. But at the same time, we have too much pride to think about finishing 30th two years in a row.”
If the Oilers, who currently have more pluck than puck luck, are going to move from the bottom of the league standings, the push will need to start with Friday’s game against the 29th place Colorado Avalanche.

One Team Struggled, One Team Is Struggling

from Eric Duhatschek of the Glob and Mail,
Train wrecks in professional sport are always fascinating to watch and dissect, especially if they happen to come out of nowhere. For example, the New York Islanders were a train wreck earlier this season, once going 20 games without a victory, but they are a franchise that’s forever spinning its wheels under Charles Wang’s ownership.
What is more surprising about the Islanders is that since Christmas, they have the seventh best record in the NHL, and that goaltender Al Montoya, who looked as if he’d be another failed New York Rangers’ prospect, is making the most of his first real chance for full-time NHL duty and playing pretty well (7-3-3, .920 save percentage, 2.36 GAA).
In the Western Conference, however, no one can quite put their finger on why the Colorado Avalanche is struggling so badly - to the point where, most nights, they don’t look like an NHL team.

Is This Called Sending A Message?

from Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants,
Then, Avalanche coach Joe Sacco, for zero reason, shamefully throws out pugilist David Koci and agitator Cody McLeod with 3 1/2 seconds left in a 5-2 game (Avs losing).
Well, what do you think happened?
First, McLeod two-handed Warren Peters so hard on the left leg immediately after the faceoff, Peters was shaking his leg back into his zone. Then McLeod goes into the corner and took a needless run at Marek Zidlicky, the Wild’s very banged-up offensive defenseman who is playing with a significant injury and tonight was playing despite missing much of the second period with an obvious hand injury.
It was just a bush-league move by an Avs’ coach who’s spent the entire second half making ridiculous decision after ridiculous decision for a team that’s 1-14-2 in their past 17.

Peter Mueller Won’t Play This Season
by Paul on 03/05/11 at 03:00 PM ET

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,
Despite the fact that his concussion symptoms have improved, Peter Mueller has been shut down for the season by the Avalanche. He will not play this year at all, but will continue with his rehab and the plan is for him to be ready at training camp next fall.
Mueller’s loss obviously was a factor in the Avs’ bad season. It was a confusing, frustrating thing for all involved. He seemed to be fully recovered in last fall’s camp from a previous concussion suffered after a big hit from Rob Blake late last season. But in the Avs’ very first preseason game against the Kings, he suffered another concussion.
