Maybe, Just Maybe, Shanahan Knew What He Was Doing

Afterall, Brendan Shanahan has been a part of the Wings locker room and he knows the main goal of that room is to win the game.

Instead of suspending Shea Weber for a game, maybe Shanahan knew/felt the Wings would respond in a way to make Weber accountable for his actions and still force Weber to skate on egg shells for the rest of series.

Back in his Detroit playing days, Shanahan would have played the role of Bertuzzi in the fight below, and instead of the goal scorers being Emmerton, White and Franzen perhaps they would have been Maltby, Murphy and Hull.

Make no mistake, Weber should have received a game suspension, but they way things have worked out, maybe not suspending him will be much better in the long run for the Wings.

Media Reaction To The Weber Fine

I am not going to link back to the actual tweet or else I would be here all day.

I am actually surprised by the reaction…

Adam Proteau-

James Wisniewski’s suspension cost him $536,585.36. He should’ve smashed Zetterberg in the head 214.634144 times instead!

Habs Inside/Out-

$2,500 fine. For twice wantonly driving a man’s head into the glass w/ violent force. Playoff rules? What a sad joke

Helene Elliott-

Just when you think the NHL might be getting a clue, Weber gets fined but not suspended for atrocious shots to head of Zetterberg. Terrible.

Bruce Arthur-

Shea Weber fined $2,500 for turnbuckling Henrik Zetterburg’s head. Maybe woulda got suspended if he’d hit him with the ring bell, though.

Weber Fined For Hit On Zetterberg

NEW YORK (April 12, 2012) – Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber has been fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for delivering a blow to the head of Detroit forward Henrik Zetterberg in Game 1 of the teams’ Western Conference Quarterfinal series in Nashville on Wednesday, April 11, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 20:00 of the third period. Weber was assessed a minor penalty for roughing.

“This was a reckless and reactionary play on which Weber threw a glancing punch and then shoved Zetterberg’s head into the glass,” said NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan. “As is customary whenever Supplemental Discipline is being considered, we contacted Detroit following the game and were informed that Zetterberg did not suffer an apparent injury and should be in the lineup for Game 2.

“This play and the fine that addressed it will be significant factors in assessing any incidents involving Shea Weber throughout the remainder of the playoffs.”

After Surgery, Helm Won’t Be Ready Until Training Camp

Detroit, MI…Detrot Red Wings forward Darren Helm underwent successful surgery last night to repair lacerated tendons in his right forearm. The injury, suffered with just over eight minutes remaining in the first period of the Red Wings Western Conference Quarterfinal Game 1 vs. Nashville, will sideline Helm for the remainder of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Helm is expected to make a full recovery and return for the Red Wings 2012 training camp.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Douglas Weikert at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

All Mike Babcock

from Bob Wojnowski of the Detroit News,

Q. Not sure if you’ve noticed, but almost nobody is picking you guys to beat Nashville. I saw on ESPN, 11 of 12 experts took the Predators.

A. This is what I know about the experts — they get paid to make those decisions. But I’m here to tell you, I coach in the league and I have no idea about most of these series. They’re that tight.

Q. I figured a coach might like that motivational aspect. Do you find it strange being an underdog?

A. I just think sometimes that’s reality. We’re playing a real good team. They’ve loaded up, they’re deep and their goalie (Pekka Rinne) is huge.

But we’re deep too. I’m really excited about the fact (Darren) Helm will be available. You have no idea how much better coach I become when you put people in the right places. Without him, we’re not slotted as good.

Q. So, can you calm a nervous Hockeytown? The Wings have overcome a bunch of injuries, but I get the sense people don’t think there’s gonna be a run this year.

A. This is what I’d say to you — going into the summer, (GM) Kenny Holland and I talked a lot, and we didn’t even know if we’d make the playoffs. Then as the year went on, I said this is the best opportunity for any team I’ve coached since ‘09 (when the Wings lost in the Cup finals to the Penguins).

Evening Line

“You never know how long you’re going to play, maybe this is my last year, or maybe there’s one more, who knows.  But for sure, it’s an end of the road, but you have fun, suck it in and see what happens. … This is the best time of the year.”

Wanted- One Moody Mule

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

To succeed against as big and physical an opponent as the Predators, the Wings need Franzen to play with fire. It’s a rare player who performs at a consistently high level all season (his name: Nicklas Lidstrom), but Franzen is one of those guys who can be frustrating to watch when he doesn’t use his size to bulldoze opponents and drive to the net. He does do that this time of year, though, and that’s encouraging for the Wings’ chances of success.

“Him in particular,” close friend Niklas Kronwall said, “when he gets in the mood, he’s really, really hard to stop. He uses his body so well. At the same time, he’s got great hands, great vision. And it’s tough to play someone with all those elements together.

“He is huge part of our team and when he gets going, and he is in his right state of mind, he’s a game changer.”

At 6-feet-3 and some 220 pounds, Franzen towers over most of his fellow forwards.

“Mule is one of those guys that to me,” coach Mike Babcock said, “when he is on the top of his game, he is as good as anyone in the game.”
