Lokomotiv Wives Fund

Stacy Dallman—wife of Kevin Dallman, formerly with the Kings, Bruins and Blues, and currently playing in the KHL—has been working hard to help raise money for the wives and families of Lokomotiv players who were lost in the recent tragedy.

imageStacy has organized a charitable initiative to raise money to help those families and asked if we could help spread the word.  They have already raised some $11,000 and hope to raise much more by the end of the hockey season, with the help of hockey fans around the world.

“The tragedy has pulled together hockey wives from almost all leagues world-wide, and our goal is to collect as many donations as possible to give to the Lokomotiv Wives and families at the end of this hockey season,” says Stacy.

You can find about more about the Lokomotiv Wives Fund on Facebook.  There are options to donate money, or simply share your well-wishes with the families affected.

Thanks for checking it out.

Speculation About the KHL Plane Crash

From Russia Today:

The Yak-42 that crashed near Yaroslavl taking 44 lives last week was in proper mechanical condition and the latest repairs were done to all requirements, the transport prosecution has ruled. Pilot error is the most likely cause of the tragic crash.

The last scheduled service of the plane was in August, during which the right engine was replaced and all other defects were reportedly eliminated. All these repairs were certified and correspond to requirements informed the transport prosecution.

The company that provided technical maintenance of the Yakovlev Yak-42 aircraft was inspected by experts from the Russian transport prosecution.

For more reading, a writer at the Digital Journal provides speculation on other possible causes and notes that passenger Pavel Trakhanov was using his cell phone during takeoff (as noted in this other, Russia Today story). You can read the DJ article here, and it also links to some other info on cell phone use and its dangers during takeoffs/landings.  However, no one official—that we know of—has alleged it is a factor in this particular disaster.

Plans for Rebuilding Locomotiv in Yaroslavl

From Dmitry Chesnokov at Puck Daddy:

This morning, the KHL’s Vice President Ilya Kochevrin spoke exclusively with Puck Daddy regarding the plans for the future of the League and for Lokomotiv.

“Our priority right now is also to keep hockey in Yaroslavl. We can tell you that more than 30 current active players who have played for Lokomotiv in their careers have announced that they want to come to Yaroslavl to play,” he said, “and the League is setting up an option where those players selected by the new head coach of Lokomotiv and will come to play there, their salary will be paid by their current KHL clubs, those where they are under a contract right now. At least for this season.”

You read that right: The KHL’s other franchises will fund the roster for Lokomotiv under the current option for the League.

“This will be done to alleviate the financial burden that Lokomotiv has right now because the team still has to pay out the entire contract of each player, coach and personnel who died yesterday. They just don’t have this sort of a budget,” Kochevrin continued.

All Alexei Kovalev

from Dmitry Chesnokov of PuckDaddy,

Kovalev arrived in Russia today and joined his new team in the suburbs of Moscow. During his interview, Kovalev candidly discussed the hockey media, saying Ottawa journalists “don’t watch hockey at all. When they fly with the team and go through the [metal detector] at an airport, their bags are filled with beer.”

I asked Sergei Gonchar(notes) what game model Ottawa had. The defenseman could only throw his hands up.

“In two seasons I still couldn’t understand the ideas of our coach Cory Clouston. It seemed that he scoffed at some players.”

What do you mean?

“You have to treat players kindly. If you leave someone on the bench you should explain why it happened. This is coach’s job. But when a player is benched and doesn’t understand what is happening, he becomes lost.”

You were then traded to the Penguins, where Malkin and Crosby didn’t play due to injuries. Why didn’t it work out there?

“Everything was fine. I had played for Pittsburgh before. The atmosphere doesn’t change there. But my style didn’t fit with the game coach Dan Byslma was implementing. There is nothing else to explain it with.”
