Afternoon Line

“I think that was a pretty strong reflection of what my feelings were on his play and that’s not a one-game snapshot. I don’t do that based on one game. I think there’s been a stretch of games where he …is such an important leadership role for this team need to play a higher level of hockey.”

Florida’s Goalie Markstrom Will Undergo A Knee Procedure

from Harvey Fialkov of the SunSentinel,

The information is still sketchy but the Panthers have confirmed that Panthers rookie goalie Jacob Markstrom will undergo minor knee surgery tomorrow. No timetable on his return but if it’s a scope, then plan on at least 3-4 weeks because of how important flexibility is to goalies. This is a blow, but not dramatic, as starter Jose Theodore’s knee injury is believed to be on the mend and he could be at practice this week.

From Lower-Body Injury To Bruised Tailbone To Concussion

from Harvey Fialkov of the SunSentinel,

It seems timely with the Vancouver Canucks and former Panther David Booth coming to town, that another Panther, Mikael Samuelsson, has admitted to the Vancouver Province that he did indeed sustain a concussion last month despite the team not being publicly forthright with their medical diagnosis.

I understand that ‘concussion’ has become a dirty word in sports these days, but once it’s obvious a player has sustained a head injury and is out of action shouldn’t NHL teams be held accountable to issue a truthful diagnosis to the press? I will find out….

However the Panthers told us it was a lower body injury and then a bruised tailbone. I took their word for it. No longer.

Getting To The Bottom Of The Barch Story

from George Richards of On Frozen Pond at the Miami Herald,

The agent for Florida Panthers forward Krys Barch said his client has been talking to the NHL player’s association regarding his ejection from Saturday night’s game for an alleged racial slur but had yet to talk to the league.

Scott Norton, who has known Barch since he was a 15-year-old junior player in Canada, said that Barch is “upset and concerned for his family.” He added the comment directed toward Montreal’s P.K. Subban from the Panthers bench was misconstrued and “didn’t have any racial undertones nor was a slur. It may have been a misunderstanding or taken out of context” by linesman Darren Gibbs.

A league official told The Miami Herald on Saturday that Barch was ejected for using racially charged language.

No Place In The Game For This

via CBC,

Montreal Canadiens defenceman PK Subban was subjected to a racial slur at the end of the first period of Saturday’s game in Florida against the Panthers, according to a report.

Florida forward Krys Barch was given a game misconduct after time expired at the end of the first following a scrum between Panthers and Canadiens players.

Linesman Darren Gibbs reported hearing a racial slur used by Barch, according to a tweet from Panthers beat reporter George Richards of the Miami Herald.

Subban, born in Toronto to parents originally from Jamaica, incurred four penalty minutes during the scrum.

added 9:39pm, from George Richards of On Frozen Pond,

“No comment,’’ general manager Dale Tallon said as he was heading downstairs during the second intermission. “I don’t know what happened yet.’‘

Said team general partner Cliff Viner: “This is not what the character of this organization is about. SubbanPeriod. I’m devastated by that kind of behavior. That is not what we’re about as an organization, a team, coaching staff, hockey operations.

“Dale, I’m sure, will be very critical of this. I hope they talk to the team and let them know this is unacceptable. You play hard, you fight hard. But that’s not part of any competition.’‘

Del Zotto And Kopecky Fined

NEW YORK—New York Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto and Florida Panthers forward Tomas Kopecky have been fined $2,500 apiece, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for their respective actions during an altercation in NHL Game No. 553 in Sunrise, Fla., on Friday, Dec.30, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 19:52 of the third period. Del Zotto was assessed a minor penalty for high sticking. Kopecky was assessed a match penalty.

Video- Battle In Miami

With 8 seconds left during the Rangers 4-1 win over the Panthers.

Florida Tomas Kopecky: 10 minutes, match penalty
NY Rangers Mike Rupp: 5 minutes, fighting
NY Rangers Mike Rupp: 10 minutes, game misconduct
NY Rangers Michael Del Zotto: 2 minutes, hi-sticking
Florida Krystofer Barch: 10 minutes, misconduct

added 10:51pm, from Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel,

At least the brawl in the closing seconds should catch HBO’s attention as after Rangers’ Michael Del Zotto forechecked Tomas Kopecky with the butt end of his stick in the back of the head, Kopecky decked him, but then was pummeled by Mike Rupp.

Kopecky received a match penalty and may have to sit out Saturday’s New Year’s Eve game against the Canadiens.

“Some guy crosschecks you in the back he deserves a smash in the face. He got what he deserved and then guys that play five minutes a night, that’s typical they go out there and grab one of our skilled players,’’ Dineen said. “We’ll see what the response is.”

Coach Peter Worrell

from Dan Hickling of the Journal Tribune,

A towering presence at 6-foot-8 and 250 pounds, (Peter) Worrell was all muscle and mayhem, and in a seven year NHL stay with Florida and Colorado, battled his way to a whopping 1,554 minutes in penalties.

How many of those do you think came for delay of game?

Hah.

Which is what makes the notion of the massive Carribean-Canadian coaching a high school hockey team from South Florida so intriguing.

Those enormous hands, which when curled into bone hammers pummeled more than 100 tough opponents from 1997-2004, are now given the task of molding young players at North Broward Prep, a team making its first appearance this week in the Maine High School Hockey Invitational.

And doing it quite well, we might add, as lopsided wins over Bangor and Lewiston, both of them strong Maine high school programs, will bear witness to.

“We have a good, talented program,” said Worrell. “We’re just a little young.”
