Halak’s Play Pushes Price To Work Harder

from Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette,

Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin had a simple explanation when asked why goaltender Carey Price has turned his season around in the past five games.

“I have to say he’s been working a lot harder lately,” said Martin, who confirmed Price will start his fourth consecutive game Friday night when the Canadiens play Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals (7 p.m., TSN, RDS, CJAD Radio-800).

Martin said Price’s competitive spirit came to the fore when Jaroslav Halak went on a four-game winning streak at the end of October.

“I think when Jaroslav had a good stretch for us, it was a good message for Carey that he had to improve his work ethic,” Martin said.

Their Left Foot

from Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail,

We take great pride in knowing our beloved city and province inside and out, but it doesn’t mean we aren’t surprised by new things from time to time.

For instance: we had no idea Montreal was a really dangerous place to be a left foot.

Just ask Brian Gionta’s podiatrist. Or Hal Gill’s, or Andrei Markov’s (or short-track speed skater Francois-Louis Tremblay, for that matter).

Each of the three is suffering from a left foot injury that will keep them out for a lot longer than the Habs can afford to miss them.

And it’s not like these guys are insensitive to the care and pampering of paws and hoofs - they’re millionaires after all, so we bet there’s more than one who has a favourite pedicure place.

Morning Line

I have stopped trying to figure out the Canadiens. They should have had the Hurricanes for lunch without No. 1 goalie Cam Ward and their best forward, Eric Staal. This one should have been decided long before Kostitsyn’s goal.

They can take the two points and run, but it’s pretty clear that this team has to start scoring goals if they hope to make the playoffs. You don’t win a lot of games with only two goals in regulation, and how the Hurricanes managed to miss winning the shootout when one goal in the third, fourth and fifth rounds would have done the job is difficult to understand.

Gainey Disappointed In Walsh Twitter Incident

from Elliotte Friedman of CBC,

Not surprisingly, Bob Gainey does not use Twitter. He hasn’t personally seen what Allan Walsh tweeted last weekend. But, he’s aware of the controversy, and Jaroslav Halak won’t be held responsible for his agent’s thoughts.

“I thought it was infantile ... ‘My dad is bigger than your dad,’ kind of thing,” Gainey said Tuesday after session one of the annual general manager meetings in Toronto. “It’s disappointing.”

“I don’t know [about] Halak ... but if this happened to you, you might want to pick up the phone and let your agent know that he’s not doing the best for you.”

Carey Price Remembers The Vets

from Dave Stubbs of Habs Inside/Out,

Canadiens goalie Carey Price has had a special Remembrance Day mask made to commemorate the efforts of Canada’s soldiers, past and present. He wore it in warmup last night and will take it to Phoenix for tomorrow’s game.

The mask features a likeness of a wreath-laying soldier on one side, a bagpiper on the other and the words to John McCrae’s World War I poem In Flanders Fields…

Did Player Agent Go Too Far?

from Dave Stubbs of Habs Inside/Out,

Allan Walsh, agent for Canadiens goalie Jaroslav Halak, knowingly or otherwise smacked a hornet’s nest on Twitter last night immediately following the Habs’ 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay with his tweet: “Interesting stat of the night.... #Habs’ Price is 10W, 32L in last 42 starts. Hmm.”

Whether an agent should so publicly be promoting a client at the expense of someone else – that would be Carey Price – even between the lines is subject to debate. The Internet has changed all the rules (some would say significantly lowered the bar) of credibility, professionalism and even common sense.

Stubbs mentioned Kelly Hrudey was not happy with the the remark from Walsh and you can watch what Kelly had to say at about the 6:15 mark in the video below…

No Way To Treat A Star

from Jack Todd of the Montreal Gazette,

Lafleur and Roy were the last two of what could be called the iconic players of the most legendary franchise in the game. While the Canadiens have had whole buckets full of stars and Hall of Famers, there have been no more than five towering figures who made the team what it is today.

Howie Morenz. Rocket Richard. Jean Béliveau. Guy Lafleur. Patrick Roy. They were the players who in their day electrified an entire province and reached such status that it was possible, with a straight face, to call the Forum St. Patrick’s Cathedral. If hockey is a religion in Quebec, these men are its high priests.

And three of them – Richard, Lafleur and Roy – saw their careers ended in a sad, bungled fashion.

The Rocket left at a desk without a job, until he walked out to make his living selling fishing line and heating oil.

Has Price Found His Game?

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

There is a time in a season when a player has that moment that changes everything.

I wonder whether Carey Price had his Thursday night in Boston. His 42-save performance lifted the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 shootout win over their rivals.

Hey, I know the Bruins were missing Marc Savard, Milan Lucic and David Krejci, and I know how their offense has dried up mightily in the last little while.

But Price delivered a dynamite effort in enemy territory as the Bruins launched everything but the kitchen sink at him. And that’s why I consider this game meaningful for Price.
