One Of Those Nights

Did you ever lay down on your couch in the early evening, thinking you could take a cat nap, only to wake up at 1:30am, in a panic, not knowing where you are?

It happened to me tonight, a long time to be cat napping, but not as long as the goal drought Scott Gomez broke Thursday night…

Not Many Like Ken Dryden

from Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette,

Ken Dryden is in the city for a reading Thursday night of his memoir, The Game – in my view, the best hockey book ever written.

His appearance brings back memories of a time when the Canadiens ruled, starting with Dryden’s stunning debut in 1970-71. As you know, that’s when the goaltender led the Canadiens to a remarkable first-round victory over the heavily favoured Big Bad Bruins, led by Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito, in seven games – after Dryden had played in only six regular-season games. From there, the Canadiens brought home the Stanley Cup with a victory in six games over the Minnesota North Stars and then a seven-game victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in the final.

Dryden’s visit also recalls the foreward he graciously agreed to write for my 1994 book Hockey, Heroes and Me. It started, also graciously, this way:

“I wonder what Red thinks. It would happen two or three times a year. When things were going badly for the team or me. When after a game, sleepless and alone, staring into the darkness of my office, I could find no answers. I did it with no one else. In a few hours, when The Star or later The Gazette was at our front door, I would know.

“I didn’t always agree with him, and when I didn’t I would get angrier than I did with anyone else. I wanted so much for him to be wrong, and knew he probably wasn’t.”

Nice.

Pierre McGuire A Great Match For GM Job In Montreal

from MitchMelnick.com,

I’m not going to step aside over some supposed professional code. I sincerely believe that Pierre McGuire would do a terrific job as an NHL General Manager. And I think it’s about bloody time somebody in this town talked to him about the GM post of the Montreal Canadiens.

I believe that Pierre is the best hockey analyst in the business. Almost too good, it turns out, to return to work for an NHL franchise. He revolutionized the way the game is now described on television and more importantly, what hockey fans expect out of a telecast. The energy and passion he possesses is obvious. His knowledge of virtually any player anywhere on the planet, let alone an NHL ice surface, reveals his strong roots as a scout. That knowledge has never wavered from the moment I first met him, sitting in the old balcony at the Montreal Forum during a Canadiens playoff match up that I have since forgotten everything about except for the guy I was sitting next to. Regular members of the hockey beat would moan and groan about being dislodged from their regular press box seats at playoff time when numbers of the working media would swell beyond capacity. I eagerly would give up my seat above center ice and actually request a move to the balcony because I knew that’s where a lot of scouts would find their assigned seats. I figured I might learn something. And that’s how I discovered Pierre McGuire.

Just Checking, Where’s Chara?

from Mike Harrington Of Sabres Edge at the Buffalo News,

The Montreal Canadiens are chafed that Sabres center Paul Gaustad allegedly said, “Where’s Chara?” in the direction of Max Pacioretty following Patrick Kaleta’s empty-net goal late in the third period of Tuesday’s 3-1 Buffalo victory. The quip, of course, is in reference to the ghoulish hit Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara put on Pacioretty last season that resulted in a broken neck.

“He’s got a big mouth and he likes to run it,” Habs goalie Carey Price said of Gaustad. “What can you do? Can’t worry about what he’s got to say. He doesn’t do much out there.”

Detroit vs. Montreal

Every year I dream of a Detroit/Montreal SCF.

Hopefully in my lifetime, I was just a kid when the last met, and yes, Henri Richard did direct the puck in to the net, I hope to witness at least one more series.

Afternoon Line

“We realize the scope of what we’re up against tonight. This is the best team in the NHL right now and they’re definitely playing like it. They’re a group of veterans that all play very intelligently.  They control the puck a lot of the time and they really make you fight for possession. We’re going to have to be at our best and try to push our style of game.

“We have to be ready to go for 60 or 65 minutes if need be to come out of this with two points.  We’ll have all the time we need to rest up after tonight, but right now we need to set our sights on winning this game.”

-Montreal Canadiens assistant captain Josh Gorges.  More on the game from Justin Fragapane at the Canadiens website.

Detroit vs. Montreal

The way it was!

You will see some hockey action from the 1954 Stanley Cup Final between the Wings and Canadiens, and then it gets real good.

Host Curt Gowdy (needs some help with pronouncing Vezina) with some of the great stars from both teams plus play by play man Budd Lynch.
