Tortorella Responds To The “Headhunter” Quote From DeBoer

from Dave Lozo of NHL.com,
On Saturday, Devils coach Peter DeBoer referred to the Rangers’ Brandon Prust as a “headhunter” after his blow to the back of the head of defenseman Anton Volchenkov.
On Sunday, Rangers coach John Tortorella responded to that comment by defending Prust and accusing the Devils of embellishing calls and setting illegal picks during their power plays.
“He’s probably one of the most honest players,” Tortorella said, before launching into a a big chunk of gamesmanship. “I look at (Dainius Zubrus’) elbow to (Anton) Stralman. I look at (Zach) Parise launching himself at (Michael) Del Zotto. Maybe if our players stay down on the ice, we’ll get something. We tell our players don’t stay down on the ice, get up.
“The picking on the power play. If we want to start discussing officials with the media, I’ve got a long list here. That’s a set play by Jersey—picking so we can’t get to (Ilya) Kovalchuk to block his shot. There’s some gamesmanship right there, huh?”

No penalty on the play but post-game Devils’ coach Pete DeBoer called it “head hunting plain and simple.”

New York Rangers Defeat New Jersey Devils 3-0

The Rangers now lead the series 2-1 with game 4 coming up on Monday evening.
It was a back and forth game until the 3rd period when Dan Girardi scored on the power play early in the 3rd then the Rangers added two more goals to close out the game.
Rangers found as much offense as they needed, now the Devils must figure out a way to put some pucks past Lundqvist.
Here’s Jim Hughson of HNIC with the Girardi goal…

The puck drops just after 1:00pm on NBC, CBC and RDS.
Instead of giving you the normal pre-game talk, let’s go back to 1994, Game 3, Rangers/Devils.

Can The Devils Outscore The Rangers?
by Paul on 05/19/12 at 04:21 AM ET

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
The New York Rangers aren’t about to beat themselves. They’ll pack five skaters in front of Henrik Lundqvist and hurl themselves in every way possible at flying pucks.
So it makes sense to try and force the Rangers to beat you. You know, by scoring goals.
That, in a nutshell, is what the New Jersey Devils are intent on doing in this Eastern Conference final. They’ve decided to continue doing what they like to do, in this case pressuring the Rangers by having their own defencemen pinch aggressively and, as often as possible, play with five men in the offensive zone.
Then it’s up to the Rangers to prove they can bust out and create offence themselves.
So far in these playoffs, they haven’t been able to do it. At least not very often.
In compiling a 9-7 record over three series, the Rangers have scored more than two goals in a game just five times.

Zach Parise’s Dad Clarifies Comments

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
J.P. Parise issued a statement to the reporters that cover the Devils this evening to clarify his comments today in Newsday, which were portrayed to suggest his son, Zach, - the Devils captain – might sign with the Rangers as an unrestricted free agent this summer.
“I have to say I was extremely disappointed in how my comments were portrayed in today’s newspaper article,” J.P. Parise said. “I would never speak for Zach under any circumstance. He has not talked to me about anything other than the playoffs and we have not discussed anything but the playoffs and that is 100 percent where his focus is right now and I have absolutely no intentions to distract and get things away from his focus right now.”
Zach Parise was unaware of the interview his father did with Newsday until I told him about the article after today’s practice.

Will The Devils Write A New Script?

from Mike Vaccaro of the NY Post,
Afterward, they would recite from the familiar missals and mantras, talk about how they were outhustled and outworked and out-effort-ed, the whole laundry list of self-flagellation that accompanies all of the Rangers’ losses now.
It is possible that the Devils outplayed them, too, but we have come to realize that such concessions around the Rangers are tantamount to refusing to take a loyalty oath. The Senators outworked them three times. The Capitals outhustled them three times. Now the Devils have done it once.
Really, it doesn’t matter if you’re a Ranger this morning: blame yourself. Credit the Devils. Wake up tied, again, 1-1. Take the day off. Go back to work tomorrow. Litter the ice Saturday with bodies, litter those bodies with black-and-blue marks roughly the size of hockey parks.
Rinse. Return. Repeat.
And hope that the Devils, unlike the Senators, unlike the Capitals, aren’t ready to light the script on fire.

New Jersey Devils Beat The New Yori Rangers 3-2, Series Tied At One Game Apiece

Just like that, the Devils now grab the home-ice advantage.
It was the Rangers who had difficulty scoring goals tonight and although they controlled the 1st period, it was the Devils who had more of an offensive push in the 2nd and 3rd periods.
Game 3 is in New Jersey on Saturday at 1:00pm, so the extra day to travel eight miles will be put to good use for both teams.
Here’s the game winner from David Clarkson early in the 3rd period, Jim Hughson of HNIC with the call…

Rangers/Devils Points

from Katie Strang of ESPN New York,
At a glance: After shutting out their Hudson River rivals 3-0 in Game 1 Monday at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers aim to do something they have yet to accomplish this post-season: take a 2-game series lead. Meanwhile, the Devils look to even the series after letting the opener slip away after outplaying the Rangers for significant stretches.
Shots fired: Via a Devils spokesperson, goaltender Martin Brodeur defended his post-game comments in the wake of Game 1’s 3-0 shutout loss. The 40-year-old veteran, who reportedly suggested the Devils try aiming for the heads of the Rangers to curb their willingness to block shots, said the remarks were made “off-the-cuff.” Brodeur, who no longer talks on game days, said through the spokesperson that his intent was not to target the Rangers in such a way.
