Oh To Be An Islanders Fan

Pierre LeBrun of ESPN answers some rant emails,

I give up this year. The Islanders have ripped my heart out and thrown it in the gutter. Hockey gods, have mercy.

My take: Honestly, and I’ve said this before, there is no fan I feel more empathy for than those of the Islanders. You talk about loyalty—and heartbreak. I really thought they might get in the playoffs this season. I look at the young core, and I see a team that would be knocking at the playoff door. Isles GM Garth Snow told me a few weeks ago that he had no intention (at least at that point) to move Evgeni Nabokov. But I think now that it’s clear the Isles won’t make the playoffs after Monday afternoon’s horrible loss at home to the Senators—another lost chance at narrowing the gap. So, if I were Snow, I would see what he can get for Nabokov. A second-round pick is a solid return. You can’t let Nabokov walk out the door July 1 and get nothing in return.

Parenteau Not Pursuing Contract At This Time

New York Islanders forward P.A Parenteau wants to focus on helping his team make the playoffs and would prefer to shelve contract negotiations until the end of the season.

Parenteau’s agent, Allan Walsh says he and his client don’t believe it is appropriate to pursue contract discussions at this time, but will listen if the Islanders are eager to negotiate.

“He’s made it very clear from the outset that he’s highly motivated to stay with the New York Islanders,” Walsh told TSN.ca via e-mail. “The Islanders gave him his first real opportunity to thrive in the NHL, he has a fantastic relationship with his teammates, the coaches, Garth Snow and the fans. Most importantly, PA sees the Islanders trending up and believes they will be a contending team for many years to come….”

Garth Snow Has No Intention Of Moving Nabokov

“Yeah, we have a lot of belief in that locker room,” Isles GM Garth Snow told ESPN.com Wednesday. “Within the last few weeks, we’ve really turned it up a notch as a team. Our specialty teams have improved. We’re just looking forward to the next game.”

Veteran netminder Evgeni Nabokov has been lights-out of late. He’s slated for unrestricted free agency July 1, which is why his name is often floated in trade rumors, but that’s not what Snow has in mind at this point.

“We have no intention of moving Evgeni,” Snow said. “He’s been great for us. His performance speaks for itself.”

There haven’t been any contract talks between the Islanders and Nabokov’s camp, but it’s not out of the question down the road.

“Yeah, we’d consider all options, we’re just not at that point yet,” said Snow. “We just finished [signing] Frans [Nielsen] and we obviously have a few other players who are unrestricted free agents in July, so we’ll just chip away at them.”

Islanders Need To Keep P.A. Parenteau

An amiable sort, Parenteau said he never doubted his ability to contribute at this level, even though his path has been dotted by more than a few road blocks.

“It’s been a long road,” he said. “But I’m a pretty confident guy.”

Obviously getting a chance to play with guys such as John Tavares, also a good friend of Parenteau’s, and Matt Moulson hasn’t hurt.

“When I make a nice play around here, it doesn’t get wasted,” Parenteau said.

Now here’s where it gets interesting for the Isles, who this week signed forward Frans Nielsen to a four-year contract extension worth $11 million. Nielsen has 25 points, or roughly half those collected by Parenteau, who is slated to become an unrestricted free agent July 1. Sources familiar with the negotiations say that the team has yet to begin discussions about extending Parenteau, but with the Islanders crawling back into the edge of the playoff discussion in the Eastern Conference (they are in 11th place in the conference, nine points back of eighth-place Ottawa with four games in hand), it’s hard to imagine GM Garth Snow won’t make getting Parenteau under contract a top priority. Similarly, it’s hard to imagine Snow letting Parenteau walk away for nothing on July 1.

Frans Nielsen Contract Extended By The Islanders

The New York Islanders signed C Frans Nielsen to a four-year contract extension worth a total of $11 million.

Nielsen will be paid $2.0 million in the first year of the contract, followed by $2.5 million, $3.0 million, and $3.5 million. The average annual cap hit is $2.75 million.

Nielsen has nine goals and 25 points in 51 games with the Islanders this season. Last season he scored career-high 13 goals and 44 points. In 288 career games, the 27-year-old has 46 goals and 145 points.

Tavares On the Rise

John Tavares, the New York Islanders centre who was the NHL’s player of the month for January, is working the corners. He spins, he rolls off two checkers, he has his head raised like a cobra in search of opportunity. He works through traffic by keeping everything in so tight to his body they cannot stop him from slipping by. He sees an opening no one else has seen, passes quickly and, instantly, a goal is scored.

Tavares is only 21 years of age, and though ESPN recently ranked the “Top 25 NHL players under age of 25” and somehow left him off the list, he is today the talk of the league after scoring nine goals and 13 assists in only 13 games last month and rising into the top five in league scoring.

He is far, far from the fastest player in the game, and yet he is also unstoppable. He works corners as effectively as, but different from, the Sedin twins of the Vancouver Canucks. He has, as Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson noted Friday before the Senators and Islanders met in Ottawa, “incredible hands and vision.”

Where does it come from? Winter or summer? Hockey rink or lacrosse box?

Why Brooklyn Won’t Work For The Islanders

So here we go again. Islanders owner Charles Wang, still unable to get any movement in Nassau County on a new arena, has decided to have his team host a preseason game in a large arena elsewhere, one that does not already house an NHL club. The obvious implication is that if he can’t get a deal to his liking on Long Island, he’s got options. Look out Long Island — Charles Wang is moving his team.

Well, he’s done this before with Kansas City. This time he’s doing it with Brooklyn. But, like the Kansas City ploy — where the game drew only 9,792 people, thus cooling any ardor Wang may have had for relocating there — this Brooklyn gambit is likely more of a charade than a bona fide threat.

It’s not because the Islanders-Devils game on Oct. 2 won’t draw well. It probably will. It’s just that the new Barclays Center, a state of the art arena designed for the NBA’s New Jersey Nets (who, quite ironically, enjoyed their greatest success as the ABA’s New York Nets while playing in Nassau Coliseum when it was new), is truly not a viable option for the Islanders.

Why not? For one thing, it moves the Isles into the territory of another team: the Rangers. All NHL franchises have defined territories that are exclusively theirs to exploit for business purposes. And while a certain overlap exists among the three New York City metropolitan area teams, Brooklyn is, as far as is known, still Rangers territory.
