Sens Lose Donovan To MCL Injury

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,

The Senators will also be without fourth-line winger Shean Donovan tomorrow and maybe for the rest of the season. He sustained a right knee injury on a knee-on-knee hit by Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke. The exact extent of the injury won’t be known until more tests are completed today, but Senators general manager Bryan Murray said it was serious.

“It’s his MCL (medial collateral ligament) for sure and he’s having an MRI to see if it’s the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), too. We won’t know until tomorrow,” said Murray.

He contacted NHL executive vice-president of hockey operations Colin Campbell to discuss the hit, but Murray said he didn’t expect there would a suspension coming for Cooke.

“If it was any other player, you wouldn’t say anything, but it’s happened several times,” said Murray of Cooke.

Senators Down In Attendance

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,

Tuesday’s less-than-capacity crowd dragged down the Senators’ average for this season.

According to attendance figures published in the Senators’ game notes, through 12 homes games this season, the Senators have attracted 217,808 fans for an average of 18,151 fans a game.

The Senators averaged 19,081 for the entire season last year, meaning the Senators are down an average of 930 fans a game. It’s believed the NHL’s average ticket price is in the ballpark of $56 US, and it’s probably reasonable to assume the Senators’ is slightly more than that.

That would mean the dip is costing the Senators close to $56,000 a game. Projected over an entire season, that comes out to a loss in ticket revenue of $2.3 million US. The hit to the bottom line, of course, is much more than that since having almost 1,000 fewer fans at the rink means fewer cars parked, hot dogs eaten and beers consumed.

Kid Ready To See His First NHL Game, Misses Start By 5 Hours

from Glen McGregor of the Ottawa Citizen,

Ten-year-old Yehya Eldidi arrived at Scotiabank Place yesterday wearing his new Ottawa Senators jacket, flushed with excitement about seeing his first NHL game.

But instead of watching his favourite player, Daniel Alfredsson, skate against the New York Rangers, Yehya looked on through locked doors as cleaners changed garbage bags and vacuumed the carpets in the lobby.

Like a handful of other ticket-holders who showed up Saturday night, Yehya and his cousin, Abraham Issa, didn’t learn until too late that the start-time of the game had been moved up from the 7 p.m. printed on their tickets to 2 p.m.

Praise For Emery As He Returns To Ottawa

from Frank Seravallii of the Philadelphia Daily News,

“He obviously had a reputation for doing all of these things that we’ve read about,” Chris Pronger said. “All I was hoping for was that he was going to stop the puck. He’s done a very good job of doing that. That other stuff can get blown out of proportion pretty easily.

“You obviously want to support a player who has come in here under a lot of scrutiny with a lot of eyeballs on him. He’s performed very well.”

It’s hard to mount an argument against that. Emery, who has posted a 9-3-1 record, is in the leaguewide Top 10 in both save percentage (.922) and goals against average (2.27). Longtime Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson joked yesterday that he hoped Emery hadn’t “worked on his game too much since he left here” because he was that good.

Off the ice, he has made a believer out of Flyers coach John Stevens.

“I laughed the other day [going to Buffalo], it was a record, he was on the plane before I was,” Stevens said. “I’ve been pleasantly surprised with who he is, how he conducts himself, how team-oriented and how hard he works. He’s really a quiet guy. You can almost say he’s shy at times. He has his own personality.”

Senators May Be Looking For A Forward

from James Gordon of Hockey Capital,

“We have to make a tweak if we can,” Murray said Monday before heading to Toronto, where the National Hockey League’s 30 general managers are meeting this week to discuss head shots, rule changes, equipment standards and maybe a deal or two.

“Very definitely, we have to find a way to get at least one more player here,” he said, acknowledging that player would probably be another forward. “I’m certainly going to investigate as we go forward here to see if there’s anything more we can do, and at some point we’ll figure out if we need to make a change.”

Sens Seem To Be Yapping Too Much

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

TSN’s Pierre McGuire said last week the Senators are whining too much to the officials.

McGuire, who has a perch between the benches during games, said officials can tune out players if they’re constantly complaining.

Whether Clouston agrees with McGuire, the coach told his players in a meeting to show up and shut up.

“If that’s the perception, we have to change that perception,” said Clouston. “If we are perceived (as being mouthy), we have to change that, whether it’s true or not. I don’t think we do anything different, but if the perception is that, we have to make adjustments.

“If that’s our image, we have to turn that around through hard work and just shutting our mouth, maybe to the other extreme. If we are perceived as going one way, we’ll go the other way until it eventually turns around.

“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We have to keep working hard, shut our mouths and, hopefully, eventually it will turn around.”

More On The Heatley Grievance

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

Publicly, the NHL’s position – on the rare occasions when commissioner Gary Bettman will discuss the NHLPA’s trials and tribulations – is that the league believes a strong union is good for business.

Deep down, it is hard to imagine they truly believe that. Otherwise, would they have not have discouraged Sens owner Eugene Melnyk from filing a complaint that seems like a sure-fire loser, given that Heatley – whatever you may think about him asking for a trade after negotiating a no-movement clause - did not technically breach his contract....

In some ways, the NHL has inadvertently done the players a favour by heading down this path. Just in case the players association required further evidence of the need for strong leadership heading into the next CBA talks, this pre-emptive shot across the union’s bow can only reinforce that belief.

And the NHLPA does have one card to play – the option of extending the CBA to 2012, or for an extra year beyond the original six-year term, to prepare for the battle that lies ahead.

That extension, you’d think, is as good as done…
