from Sam Carchidi of Broad Street Bull,
Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov was having a terrific game Sunday until he allowed a brutal wraparound goal to Marian Gaborik, giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead with 5.1 seconds left in the second period.
Bryz said the puck took a “funny bounce” off his stick and that it was like “somebody sucking the puck with a vacuum behind the net.”
more on the Flyers and watch the Gaborik goal. Score tied 1-1, 6 seconds left in the 2nd period and now the Flyers must go into the dressing room down by 1. They did lose the game 5-2.

NEW YORK (February 4, 2012)—Philadelphia Flyers center Zac Rinaldo has been fined a total of $5,000 as a result of two separate incidents during NHL Game No. 768 against the New Jersey Devils Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.
Rinaldo was fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for his late hit on Devils center Jacob Josefson at 12:51 of the second period. Rinaldo received a minor penalty for interference.
Rinaldo also was fined the maximum $2,500 for his dangerous trip of Devils left wing Zach Parise after the whistle at 11:38 of the third period. No penalty was assessed on the play.

Kovalchuk landed a right to the face of Schenn, brining him to his knees.
No penalty on Rinaldo. My mistake, he did get 2 for tripping.

This Team Never Goes Away

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
After months of debating the three-team race in the Central Division among Detroit, Chicago and St. Louis, the men from the Music City have muscled their way into the conversation.
Well, that’s what 13 wins in your past 15 games can do for you, right?
“Right now, we’ve got really good team chemistry,” Preds coach Barry Trotz told ESPN.com on Wednesday. “Talk about a group that just comes to play. We’re getting great goaltending but, really, contributions throughout our lineup. ... Everyone is playing with a purpose.”
Trotz, in fact, credited the incredible competition in his division as a factor in his young team’s rise. He feels the standard is so high when playing against the Wings, Blues and Blackhawks that his team has no choice but to try to keep up.
His team feeds off those challenges. Much like the Preds look forward to a tough test Thursday night in Philadelphia in what is ESPN.com’s Game of the Week, teams separated by two points.
“Philly’s a really good measuring stick for what the league has to offer as a top team,” Trotz said. “There’s also a couple of ex-Predators on that team. We don’t play them a lot but they’re always good games.”

Horton Doesn’t Play After Blindside Hit

from Joe Haggerty of CSNNE,
It seemed as if Nathan Horton had just escaped the fog of last year’s concussion issues, but now he might be right back in the darkness after a reckless hit from a Flyers thug.
The Bruins right wing was held out of the third period and overtime of Sunday’s 6-5 shootout win over the Philadelphia Flyers after being on the receiving end of a blindside Tom Sestito shoulder to the head. The contact with Horton came in the second period well after the puck had left his possession, and should mean that Sestito – playing in his first NHL game since Dec. 23 after being called back up from the minors – will be hearing from the league offices in the next few days.
Sestito has already been suspended twice this season: once for two games during the preseason on a hit from behind and another five-game suspension in the AHL for “an illegal check to the head of an opponent.”...
“There was a blindside hit on Horton. [The Washington game] is two days away, so we’ll see,” said Bruins head coach Claude Julien. “I haven’t had a chance to talk to our trainers or even get a doctor’s report to see how severe it is right now. I guess we’ll find out in the next few days here, but certainly [the doctors] didn’t allow him to come back in this game.”
Update: From Haggerty on Twitter, here’s a video of the hit:

On the receiving end is Steve Kampfer.
Chris Kelly took exception to the hit and both he and Schenn received five for fighting and Kelly picked up an additional two for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Pretty good game, scored tied at three with about three minutes left in the middle period.

Briere Concussed, Jagr Aggravates Groin

from Sam Carchidi of Broad Street Bull at the Philadelphia Inquirer,
For the Flyers, the all-star break cannot come fast enough.
Center Danny Briere suffered a concussion in the Flyers’ 4-1 win in New Jersey Saturday and is out indefinitely.
Late in the first period, Briere was flattened by Anton Volchenkov. Briere did not know if that was when he was injured; he was also hit by Patrik Elias in the third period.
Briere is the sixth Flyer to have a concussion this season, following Chris Pronger, Brayden Schenn, Matt Read, Claude Giroux and James van Riemsdyk.
Veteran right winger Jaromir Jagr re-aggravated a groin injury in the firt period and did not return to the game.

from Randy Miller of Flyer Files at the CourierPost,
Your agent was in town this week. Anything going on?
“No. I think it’s too early. It’s only 40-some games into the season.”
Are you interested in returning to Philly next season? So far, you’ve always said you’ll wait until after the season.
“The question is am I going to help here. I don’t want to be somewhere where I can’t help. I thought I’d be on a good team, but there are a lot of good players here.
You’re on the first line.
“So far.”
Do you want to play in NHL next season?
“Of course I want to play. I’ll see what happens.

Pay To Play In The WC Alumni Game?
by Paul on 01/19/12 at 09:36 AM ET

from Dave Feschuk and Rick Westhead of the Toronto Star,
At the NHL Winter Classic alumni game on New Year’s Eve, a baseball stadium filled with hockey fans appeared collectively touched by a feel-good moment.
Eric Lindros, a Philadelphia legend come home, was feted with a standing ovation. Bernie Parent, the 66-year-old Stanley Cup hero of the 1970s, was showered in adoring chants. Some among the faithful smiled through tears.
If the memories, for many fans, were priceless, certainly the revenue was both real and large. With about 45,000 in attendance, with reports pegging mid-level tickets at face values of $75, with suites and other premium seats going for more . . . well, let’s be conservative and suggest gate receipts topped $4 million, never mind the take from concessions and parking and merchandise.
You’ll excuse the ballpark estimations and know there is one key financial that can be stated with at least a little more certainty. The ex-players who thrilled the crowd don’t appear to have been paid like star performers. Multiple alumni sources said they weren’t paid for their services. Another source with knowledge of alumni affairs said he’d heard they were paid a nominal fee of $200. Perhaps there is more to the story.
While airfare and accommodations were also covered, some players actually spent money to play in the alumni game. Airline baggage fees meant lugging hockey equipment to Philadelphia cost about $50 to $100. Those who didn’t want to travel with hockey sticks could purchase one in the dressing room for $50.
