Will The Flyers Wake-Up?
by Paul on 05/06/12 at 12:59 PM ET

from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer,
Maybe the Flyers were looking past the New Jersey Devils and ahead to a likely series with their Winter Classic pals from the city that doesn’t sleep.
Maybe the Flyers thought the Devils would be an inferior opponent to a Pittsburgh team that they brushed aside in the conference quarterfinals.
Maybe the Flyers figured it would be easy because New Jersey was fortunate to get past mediocre Florida in the first round.
But the Devils, who have a two-games-to-one lead in the series, have their attention now.
“A wake-up call,” said center Claude Giroux, who outshined Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and the rest of the NHL in the first round with 14 points, but has just one point in the Devils series.

The Below Average Bryzgalov
by Paul on 05/04/12 at 01:53 PM ET

from Rory Barrs of the National Post,
After a 4-3-overtime loss to New Jersey on Thursday, and now in a 2-1 hole in its Eastern Conference semi-final series, Philadelphia looks deep in the red on its Bryzgalov gamble.
• Bryzgalov has allowed 31 goals in nine playoff games, the most by any goalie in the playoffs, and more than twice as many as Los Angeles’ impenetrable fortress known as Jonathan Quick (13).
• His 3.54 goals-against average is abysmal, and more than a goal-per-game worse than the nearest comparison still alive in the playoffs, St. Louis’ Brian Elliot (2.43).
• Despite facing a reasonable average of 28.2 shots per playoff game, Bryzgalov owns a .878 save percentage, lowest among his second-round peers.

“I don’t think we thought we were going to win four straight, but definitely they’ve played a lot stronger and a lot harder than me personally would have thought they’d come with. They’ve been on a high the last few weeks obviously, beating Florida in Game 7. To have to step off that plane and take the bus to come here and play, they’re riding that high. They’ve been playing really strong, playing really hard, and for us, maybe that week off was affecting our play so far.”
-Scott Hartnell of the Philadelphia Flyers on the New Jersey Devils. Hartnell was quoted via media confernce call this morning by Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice.

Kovalchuk Leads Devils To A Win

from Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated,
Discovery Channel has Shark Week. Apparently this is Russia Week in the NHL. In a week dominated by Alex Ovechkin’s ice time in Washington and Alexander Radulov’s bar time outside Phoenix, there was no more noteworthy performance than by Kovalchuk, who, especially early in the contest, appeared rejuvenated despite his debilitating injury.
When Michael Jordan plays with the flu, a nation genuflects (and buys more sneakers). When a hockey player shrugs off the effects of a horribly wonky back and performs splendidly, it is accepted as part of the job description—just another night at the office. (Or maybe the doctor’s office. In the playoffs, you don’t blab if you have 102.4 fever or need open-heart surgery.)
His return was supposed to provide the Devils with inspiration.
Instead Kovalchuk, aided by a penalty kill that negated two of Flyers power plays in overtime, gave New Jersey a win.

Flyers Hot In Philly

from Frank Seravalli of Frequent Flyers,
After dispatching the Pittsburgh Penguins in Round 1, the Flyers have captured the city of Philadelphia. Or, at least that’s what the ratings say.
We’ve already noted that the NBC ratings for Game 1 against New Jersey on Sunday were up 121 percent from last year’s Game 1 against Boston.
But the numbers from Game 2 were truly staggering for hockey in Philadelphia.
According to the overnight ratings, the Flyers’ Game 2 loss on NBC Sports Network on Tuesday night nearly doubled the combined local viewership of both the Sixers’ playoff win in Chicago and the Phillies’ game in Atlanta.
Here are the numbers, as provided by the NHL:

Jagr Believes
by Paul on 05/02/12 at 11:56 PM ET

from Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News via the Sacramento Bee,
Inside Jaromir Jagr’s locker stall, in the bowels of the Wells Fargo Center and any arena where the Flyers play, a small memento is wrapped in blue felt.
It is a trifold, no more than six inches in length. It sits next to Jagr’s hockey tape, stick wax, and various weights and braces and training contraptions.
It does not stand out, except for the shine reflecting off the gilded hand-painted faces of the Eastern Orthodox Church’s Holy Trinity, and the fact that religious icons in hockey dressing rooms are rarer than Stanley Cup-clinching goals.
Jagr, 40, rarely leaves home without his religious relics. He keeps one with him at most times, in his pocket or in his wallet. Jagr has a cross drawn on each of his game sticks, just under where his cocked hands perform nightly miracles of a different kind on the ice.
Hearing his Flyers teammates talk about his “religious” work ethic, you would hardly know Jagr is a man who visits church on mostly every game day, even on the road.

Devils Beat Flyers 4-1, Even Series at One

Well Philly fans, the puck is in your rink, what needs to be done for the Flyers to rebound from this game?
The Flyers looked great at the start of the game, then they could not generate any offense at all.
2 shots in the 2nd period and 9 in the 3rd for a total of 20 for the game just won’t cut it.
New Jersey fans, I am sure you are satisfied with the way the game played-out tonight.
added 10:24pm, Below watch the HNIC post-game video montage of the game.
