Kiprusoff Wins Game #300 With Saves Like This

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,

Kiprusoff shone brightest in the final minutes of his 34-save outing, which included a highlight-reel stop in which he was on his stomach but able to catch a puck with his feet after it rolled down his back.

Talk about a great way to reach a milestone.

“It’s nice. I try not to think about it too much, but it’s there now. And that was a huge win for us,” he said. “It’s not the easiest building to win in, but it’s not a big thing for me it’s against San Jose.”

Video- Nyjer Morgan Goes From MLB To The NHL

from Eric Gilmore at NHL.com,

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Nyjer Morgan traded his baseball bat for a hockey stick and had his “dream come true” Wednesday when he practiced with the San Jose Sharks, his hometown team.

Morgan was born in San Francisco but spent most of his childhood in San Jose, where he played youth hockey and honed his skills to the point where he earned a roster spot for one season as a teenager with the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League.

“To be out there to skate with my childhood team, and just to be out there with the boys, was an unbelievable feeling,” Morgan said.

McLellan Appears Safe In San Jose

from Mark Emmons of the Mercury News,

Coaches are hired to be fired, or so goes the blunt cliche of big-time sports. The Sharks’ Todd McLellan, though, is one coach who doesn’t buy it.

“If a team is taking that approach, then they shouldn’t hire the guy in the first place,” he said. “I wouldn’t have married my wife if I knew I was going to divorce her eventually, and I wouldn’t hire staff if I knew I was going to have to release them at some point. That makes no sense.”

But the reality is pink slips are as much a part of the coaching profession as whistles. And in hockey, the shelf life of the guys behind the bench can be especially short. This season already has seen seven NHL coaches replaced.

This weekend, McLellan will be one of the All-Star game coaches. But just last month it appeared—at least from the outside—that McLellan’s coaching seat was getting warm enough to wonder if even he was in danger.

The Sharks, laden with their usual high expectations, have not been skating on smooth ice this season. They alternate between looking like a legitimate Stanley Cup contender and a team still finding its way.

That has put increased focus on McLella

Burn’s Injury A Concern For McLellan

from David Pollak of the Mercury News,

Afterward, coach Todd McLellan voiced more concern about the potential loss of Burns than he did with how his team—which has only one victory in its past five games—played against the NHL team with fewer points than all but one other.

“The doctors are still evaluating him,” the coach said. “I know he doesn’t feel good, and I would doubt that he’s going to play for us tomorrow. It’s knee on knee, he doesn’t return, and he’s not walking very well.”

Though the initial pain had subsided, Burns still seemed to be in discomfort when he talked with reporters about the hit and his initial reaction.

“You feel pretty hot, and I thought I was going to throw up,” said Burns, who initially went to the bench, then headed to the locker room once he felt a little better.

Burns also wanted to make it clear he didn’t regard Hemsky as a dirty player delivering a cheap shot.

“It happens. It’s a quick game, it’s a quick reaction,” Burns said. “I’ve been on the other end. It’s not his fault. I know that.”

Should All OT No-Goal Decisions Be Reviewed?

Of course, all goals are reviewed, but what about those that are ruled no goal by the on-ice officials?

Should the situation room make the final call?

from Dan Rusanowsky of The Chomp at the Sharks website,

Following a thrilling 2-1 shootout victory over the Calgary Flames on January 17th, the prevailing attitude overcoming the HP Pavilion crowd was one of relief. Yes, the Sharks should have won the game at 3:55 of overtime when a Justin Braun goal was incorrectly disallowed, but all’s well that ends well, right?

What if I told you that the difference between an overtime win and a shootout win is more than one less goal for Braun, one less assist for Joe Thornton and Tommy Wingels, and one less goal against for Miikka Kiprusoff? What if the difference between an overtime win and a shootout win could amount to millions of dollars for a franchise’s bottom line?

I’m sure that I have your attention now, but let’s review the entire situation before we get to the unintended consequences of the ruling. Under Rule 69.1, contact by an opposing player is what would constitute a referee’s decision to disallow the goal, and it is very specifically noted that such a decision is not reviewable by video replay, either on site or in the NHL War Room in Toronto.

The ruling was that in driving the net, Wingels made contact with Kiprusoff, but an overhead camera showed that the contact was with Calgary’s Olli Jokinen on the play. Jokinen was not directed by Wingels into Kiprusoff, although that may have been what the officials decided. In my own humble opinion, the wrong decision was unfortunately made, and there was no way to reverse it by video review.

Video- Another Head Shot

from David Pollak of Working the Corners,

Rookie center Andrew Desjardins was near the blue line when he was on the receiving end of a high hit by Blue Jackets left wing Dane Byers early in the second period. Desjardins fell woozily to the ice, then was helped to the locker room. He did not return.

“That’s exactly what we want to eliminate from the game, exactly,” Sharks coach Todd McLellan said.

Desjardins said he was taken to what is known in the NHL as the “quiet room” after the hit, but he said after the game he was feeling much better.

“You can’t risk anything, but we don’t know anything” he said of the decision to keep him out of the rest of the game. “I feel fine, I feel all right.”
