Stamkos Close To 50 Again
by Paul on 03/09/12 at 11:46 AM ET

from John Kreiser of NHL.com,
He didn’t do it on Thursday. But sometime soon—perhaps as soon as Saturday night against Carolina—Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos is poised to join an exclusive club.
Stamkos is two goals away from becoming the NHL’s first 50-goal scorer this season. When he does, he’ll join an elite group of six players who’ve had multiple 50-goal seasons before their 23rd birthday (he turned 22 on Feb. 7). Wayne Gretzky did it four times; Mike Bossy, Mario Lemieux, Joe Nieuwendyk and Alex Ovechkin each had two seasons with at least 50 goals before turning 23—though Bossy, Nieuwendyk and Ovechkin had the disadvantage of not playing in the NHL until after their 20th birthdays.

Lightning Lose Goaltender Garon To Groin Tear
by Paul on 03/07/12 at 12:13 PM ET
Comments (1)
from the Tampa Tribune,
Tampa Bay Lightning goalie Mathieu Garon is expected to miss three to four weeks with a slight tear of his groin muscle, general manager Steve Yzerman said Wednesday.
Dustin Tokarski will be called up from the Lightning’s minor league affiliate in Norfolk, Va., and join the team in Washington, D.C., for its game Thursday against the Washington Capitals, Yzerman said.
Garon was injured 3 minutes, 54 seconds into Tuesday’s 7-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators. Dwayne Roloson entered in relief and gave up five goals on 33 shots.
Garon, who is 23-16-4 this season, had been carrying the load in goal as Tampa Bay fought back into playoff contention. He has a 2.85 goals against average and a save percentage of .901.

Lecavalier Out Indefinitely
by Paul on 02/21/12 at 12:04 PM ET

from the Tampa Bay Lightning,
Tampa Bay Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier will not play in tonight’s game against the Anaheim Ducks due to an undisclosed upper-body injury that head coach Guy Boucher said “popped up” on Monday at the team’s practice, during which Lecavalier left the ice early.
He is out indefinitely, with no certain timetable for a return. Shortly following his early exit from the rink on Monday, Lecavalier had an MRI exam which he says “revealed no gray areas” and on Tuesday, following the team’s morning skate, stated that he does not believe surgery will be necessary. Still, the timing of the injury is one the captain said is “unfortunate.”
continued and Lecavalier was seen this morning wearing a soft cast on his right hand/wrist.

Major Surgery For Ohlund
by Paul on 02/20/12 at 09:52 AM ET

from Damian Crisodero of the Tampa Bay Times,
It is easy to understand why Mattias Ohlund said, “I wake up every day in a bad mood.”
The Lightning defenseman is in pain, and the ache in his left knee that has kept him sidelined the entire regular season and off skates completely since mid November is getting worse.
“We have great trainers, and they work with me every day,” Ohlund said. “We’ve tried everything. We’ve been thinking and talking about this and finally came to the conclusion it’s time to get it done.”
What Ohlund, 35, will have done Thursday at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio is major surgery on his left knee that likely is the last best hope of saving his career.
The complicated procedure performed by noted orthopedist Anthony Miniaci will use a thin layer of titanium to resurface the bottom of the femur behind the kneecap. That should create a cushion where cartilage that usually covers the bone has flaked off to such an extent there is painful bone-on-bone rubbing at the patellofemoral joint.
