Sedins Happy With What Is Going On With MoDo

from Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun,
(Daniel) Sedin and his brother Henrik are both pleased to see what’s happening back home in Ornskoldsvik, where their hometown Swedish Elite League team, MoDo, has been revitalized by the addition of Peter Forsberg and the impending return of former Canuck captain Markus Naslund.
“They are struggling right now,” Daniel said of MoDo. “There are not a lot of people in the stands and financially they are not doing that good. This is going to help them a lot. They are pretty much sold out tonight (Thursday night).”
That sell-out crowd went home happy after Forsberg scored two goals and set up another in MoDo’s 4-0 win over Lulea. That’s two wins and six points in two games for Forsberg since he joined the team.
Both Daniel and Henrik acknowledged this week that they think about doing what Forsberg and Naslund are and return to play there in the twilight of their careers.

The Sore Foot Of Daniel Sedin
by Paul on 11/16/09 at 07:52 PM ET

from Ben Kuzma of the White Towel,
When Daniel Sedin failed to practise Monday, general manager Mike Gillis stressed that the Vancouver Canucks left winger hasn’t re-injured his left foot. He also defended the process that led to the Swede pushing his rehab on Nov. 8 in Dallas to the extent that he won’t skate with the team again until Wednesday and possibly play Friday....
“It’s not a re-injury, it’s soreness,” added Gillis, who said a re-evaluation of Sedin back in Vancouver confirmed there was no further foot damage. “You have to see him skate with the team. Skating on your own is something entirely different. No player will play here unless he can go out and play and compete in a practice and stay up with the rest of the group. If he’s not ready to do that, he’s not playing in a game.”

via Ian MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun,
Injured Canuck winger Daniel Sedin has been sent home to Vancouver and won’t play until at least next Friday’s home game.
Daniel Sedin did not practise as planned in Detroit, indicating his broken foot has not healed well enough for him to play.
Sedin broke his foot Oct. 7 and rejoined the Canucks Saturday in Dallas after skating for three straight days in Vancouver.
Sedin practised well on Sunday, but was kept off the ice on Monday. He took the morning skate Tuesday in St. Louis although he was not going to play that night.

Luongo Ill, Daniel Sedin Returns
by Paul on 11/08/09 at 06:04 PM ET

from Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province,
The surprise was supposed to be a Daniel Sedin sighting. Instead, it was a no-show by Roberto Luongo at practice Sunday that stole the show.
“He’s a little under the weather and stayed back at the hotel,” said Vancouver Canucks coach Alain Vigneault. “He started not feeling well yesterday (Saturday) and we’ll see how he’s doing tomorrow. If he’s not better, we’ll fly him later into St. Louis.”
Luongo is also recovering from a hairline rib fracture suffered Oct. 24 when he absorbed a Niklas Hagman shot in the third period against Toronto. He had been taking practice shots in hopes of returning to the lineup this week, but Tuesday now seems a stretch and perhaps Thursday in Detroit might be more manageable for the starter. In the interim, Andrew Raycroft will face the Blues if Luongo’s sickness lingers or he doesn’t feel totally healed from the rib injury.
Meanwhile, Daniel and Henrik were reunited on a line with Alex Burrows at practice....

Shane O’Brien Suspended One Game

from Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province,
Shane O’Brien has received a one-game suspension for sticking it to Sean Avery on Tuesday at GM Place.
The Vancouver Canucks defenceman, who had been benched after taking a double-minor penalty late in the second period, stormed the length of the players’ bench early in the third period to challenge the agitating Avery and stuck his stick into the abdomen of the New York Rangers winger.
O’Brien was so worked up that he had to be restrained by Canucks coach Alain Vigneault.
“You never want to be suspended and I don’t think it deserves one, but I’ll take my punishment,” said O’Brien, who won’t be eligible to play Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild.

Complaining About Holmstrom
by Paul on 10/29/09 at 10:16 PM ET

from Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province,
On Tuesday when Niklas Kronwall scored to make it 2-2 early in the second, Holmstrom not once, not twice, but three times pushed Alex Edler out of the way while at the same time bumping against Roberto Luongo.
Then on Pavel Datsyuk’s go-ahead goal that made it 4-3 on the power play, Holmstrom was partially tying up Willie Mitchell in front of Luongo. You could argue that had it been Mitchell doing the same thing he’d be called for interference.
In football it’s called offensive interference; in the NHL it’s called when and if the refs feel like it.

via the Vancouver Province,
The Vancouver Canucks will be without their best player, goaltender Roberto Luongo, for an undetermined number of games after he suffered an undisclosed injury during Tuesday night’s game against the Detroit Red Wings.
The Province will publish more details as soon as we know them
added 2:48pm, The Province has updated the same link, but really nothing new, stating the Canucks have not released anything yet.
added 3:22pm, TSN says hairline rib fracture, out at least a week.
added 3:20pm, TSN (same link) has updated and stated Luongo suffered the injury when facing the Leafs on Saturday and re-agravate it when in a collision with Betruzzi last night.
added 4:21pm, via the Vancouver Canucks,
Goaltender Roberto Luongo will not make the trip to California for the team’s back-to-back games this week as he suffered a hair line fracture to his rib midway thought Saturday’s game against Toronto.
“It happened in the third period against Toronto,” explained Luongo. “It was a band angle shot. I went one knee down against the post and the puck hit me just hit me in the seam of my chest protector. The next day was a bit uncomfortable but I was able to play through it without any problems. Just last night, during the first period it aggravated itself, not on a particular play, it just gradually got worse.”
With no clear time line for Luongo’s return, backup goaltender Andrew Raycroft will get his first start between the pipes Thursday against Los Angeles.
The Canucks are expected to call up Manitoba Moose Goaltender Cory Schneider.

What’s Worse- Kesler Breaking His Stick Or Complaining About It?
by Paul on 10/26/09 at 06:47 AM ET

via David Staples of The Cult Of Hockey,
I like Ryan Kesler, as a player. In fact, if I was on the selection committee for various Olympic teams, I’d be adding the like names Kesler, Rene Bourque and Dustin Penner to the list of contenders (Kesler is American, Bourque and Penner are Canadians).
But the way Kesler broke his stick in a hissy fit after Tom Gilbert stopped him on a scoring chance, that was disgusting. Now, maybe there was something wrong with that stick that I didn’t see, but if that guy snapped a $200 hockey stick just because his feelings were hurt, it reinforces the notion that players make too much money and that they are spoiled brats.
Kesler should pay for his own sticks. Either that, or the teams should fine him for that, a terrible example for any kid watching the game.
