Vancouver Waits For Results On Henrik Sedin’s Ankle

via TSN,

The Vancouver Canucks’ current ironman could see his streak come to an end.

Captain Henrik Sedin was not at the Exel Energy Center in Minnesota for Wednesday’s practice and was seen at the team’s hotel limping around in a large walking boot.

Sports writer Jason Botchford from the Vancouver Province tweeted that Sedin will have a CT scan done on the injured ankle in the Minnesota area this afternoon.

Sedin was injured in Tuesday’s win over the Nashville Predators, when a point shot by defenceman Kevin Klein struck him in the right ankle early in the first period.

Sedin dropped to the ice and had to be helped to the dressing room.

Gillis On Schneider

from Sportsnet,

“We’ve gotten calls about him for two years,” Gillis said. “There were times where we thought about (trading him), but we knew how good he was and I think he’s now proven to other people around the hockey world how good he is.”

Schneider has split time with Roberto Luongo this season and Gillis admits a difficult decision on which goalie to keep could be in his future.

“There’s going to come a point where we’re going to have to make a decision as we move forward,” Gillis said.

The Canucks GM still has no intention of dealing Schneider before the trade deadline, unless of course something occurs where the team was blown away with an offer.

“You never say never about anything, but this guy’s a huge part of our team and to take a huge part of your team off you team with a month left in the season and then playoffs is a challenging thing to do,” Gillis added.

Higgins Still Not Healthy

from Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun,

Chris Higgins’ latest illness is the result of a reaction to medication the Vancouver Canucks winger had been prescribed to help battle recurring staph infections.

Higgins remains in Vancouver and Canucks coach Alain Vigneault does not know exactly when he will return to the lineup.

“We got the results from the exams that they did and it is a reaction to the anti-biotics he was taking for the staph infection,” Vigneault said Monday. “Now they have got him on new medication. I didn’t talk to Bernie (trainer Mike Burnstein) after practice, but they were texting back and forth before practice and he was starting to be able to hold some food in. So we are hoping that as soon as he gets his strength back he’ll be able to join us.”

Higgins was said to be suffering flu-like symptoms and was left behind in Vancouver when the Canucks departed Friday on their current four-game road trip.

Vigneault acknowledged there is concern about Higgins’ health. He has had two separate staph infections this season and had another just over a year ago while with the Florida Panthers.

Canucks ‘Tested’ At Practice

from Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun,

For 10 minutes, all forwards and defencemen – goalies were excluded– wore heart monitors and were asked to skate half-speed from the red line deep into the defensive zone, curl around a pylon and return to their original spots. Their movements were tracked by a computer.

If it was at full speed, maybe it would make sense to a layman, or a hockey journalist. But half speed? How did that simulate anything players do in a game?

Luckily, Canuck alternate captain Kevin Bieksa seemed to understand exactly what was happening.

“It was the sleep doctors wanting to see how alert we are in the morning,” he explained. “Underneath our helmets, we had these pads on our heads. Apparently the [data] tells them how alert we are and how ready we are when we first step on the ice. You feel a little bit like a guinea pig but, whatever is going to help make us better, we’re all for it.

“We’re fine with it, we accept it and there is 100 per cent buy-in around here. Ownership and management have shown they’re looking into every possible way to gain an advantage.”

A Bit Of A Disagreement In Vancouver

from Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun,

After Sunday night’s lacklustre 4-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks, Vigneault was asked what was wrong with Kesler, whose numbers are down this season and in more than 19 minutes of ice time Sunday night failed to register a shot on goal.

“I think he has to use the players around him a little bit more so that he can get into open space and create the type of offensive chances and be the type of defensive player that he can be,” Vigneault said.

Kesler was not aware of those comments until today and bristled when they were put to him by reporters following the team’s practice at Rogers Arena.

“Me utilize my players?” Kesler said, before adding: “Obviously, I don’t know what he means by that and if he wants to say that he can come to me and talk to me about it.

“I am going to play my game, the things that have made me successful. I know what that is and if he wants to come talk to me he is more than welcome.”

Watching Vancouver/Boston

JANUARY 9, 2012 – NESN, New England’s most watched sports network, set another regular season Boston Bruins ratings record on Saturday afternoon (1/7/12) with an 8.9 average household rating in the Boston DMA (341,088 total in-home viewers) for the Bruins Stanley Cup rematch with the Vancouver Canucks. NESN’s previous best household rating for a regular season Bruins game was set on November 23, 2011 when NESN garnered an 8.4 HH rating for the Bruins 4-3 shootout win at Buffalo.

The Vancouver game earned an astounding 23 share in the Boston DMA, also setting a new NESN record for a regular season Bruins game. Share is the percentage of all households with a television in use that are watching a program. This means nearly 1 in 4 homes with a television set on was watching the Bruins game on NESN. The network’s previous record share was a 16 for the Bruins 6-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on December 17, 2011.

Just as impressive as NESN’s household rating on Saturday was the game’s ratings among key demographic categories. NESN earned an 8.0 rating (33 share) for Adults 25-54 and 11.1 rating (40 share) for Men 25-54.

NESN’s current season Bruins average is now up to a 5.2 household rating, up 86% over last season after the same number of games (34).

Chiarelli Fires Back At Vigneault

from Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston,

Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli took exception to the abrasive comments made by Vancouver Canucks coach Alain Vigneault and general manager Mike Gillis about Bruins forward Brad Marchand for his hit on Canucks defenseman Sami Salo on Saturday.

“It’s not normally my style to respond in the media to stuff like that, especially when there’s a hearing coming up,” Chiarelli said. “I would like to respond in the spirit of protecting our player. The comments made about our player, I don’t like that. Brad does play on the edge, but he’s no dirtier than two or three of their players.”
