Reviewing Wings/Canucks And Other Hockey Topics

Craig Custance and Pierre LeBrun discuss another controversial hit, a confounding move by a certain coach and the high-flyin’ Canucks.
Custance: The most intense game of the night came later between the Red Wings and Canucks, a matchup I’d love to see rekindled in the playoffs. Lots of debate about Niklas Kronwall’s hit on Ryan Kesler. Kronwall clearly left his feet, but it didn’t look like Kesler’s head was targeted. Maybe I’ve spent too much time in Detroit, but I didn’t have an issue with the hit, although Kronwall needs to stop leaping into guys. Kesler’s biggest issue was that Kronwall refused to drop the gloves after the hit, but that’s another debate altogether.
There was more than just one incident. Jimmy Howard went after Jannik Hansen after he felt he was interfered with. I know this is a touchy subject with Howard who doesn’t think he gets the same protection opposing goalies get against Tomas Holmstrom. But what a win for the Canucks, who have now won three straight and are now just one point behind Minnesota. It won’t be long until we forget their slow start, don’t you think?
LeBrun: If we get Wings-Canucks in the playoffs, Craig, count me in. You and I can collect the air miles together and cover what would be one heck of a series based on last night’s thriller. I’m a huge Ryan Kesler fan, but I think he’s dead wrong on saying Niklas Kronwall had to drop to gloves after that big hit. It was clean in my opinion, and there’s no need for a fight because of that. It’s annoying to me that today’s players feel a fight is warranted whenever there’s a loud hit—even if it’s clean….

No call on the play.
via Ansar Khan tweet,
Zetterberg said Kesler’s knee-on-knee check was “stupid play.’’ Kesler said, essentially, “what knee-on-knee check?’‘

from Derek Jory of Canucks.com,
When Michael Bublé performs in front of soldout arenas worldwide, he transforms normal people into screaming fanatics.
Give Bublé hockey equipment and the opportunity to skate with his team, the Vancouver Canucks, and the shoe is suddenly on the other foot. He’s the animated aficionado.
Bublé signed an honorary one-day contract with the Canucks Tuesday and when he arrived at Rogers Arena in the morning, he was expecting a light meet and greet with general manager Mike Gillis and coach Alain Vigneault, as arranged by director of hockey administration Jonathan Wall.
continued with pictures…
added 8:45pm, Video of the practice can be seen below, actually two videos…

Messier Says Canucks Owe Him Money For His Time In Vancouver

from Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province,
According to a report Thursday night on TSN, one-time Canucks captain Mark Messier is pursuing the NHL club over money allegedly owed him from his time in Vancouver, which ended in 2000.
Messier joined the Canucks from the New York Rangers in the summer of 1997 in a highly publicized free agent signing that, due to a host of on- and off-ice factors, marked the beginning of a downward spiral that sent the team to one of the lowest points in franchise history. The team missed the playoffs in each of his three seasons in Vancouver.
Messier was signed to a three-year, $20-million contract and departed after the term of the deal. He re-signed with the Rangers, with whom he had won the Stanley Cup in 1994, in the summer of 2000.

Vancouver has now lost back-to-back games to Columbus and Carolina.

Dave Bolland’s Stand-Up Act Fails

from Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune,
After creating a bit of a firestorm when comments the Blackhawks center made about the Canucks’ Sedin brothers during a radio broadcast in Chicago on Monday night turned viral and drew a reaction from Vancouver, Bolland backtracked following the Hawks’ 4-3 shootout victory in St. Paul, Minn.
Bolland drew the ire of Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault during a broadcast of “Blackhawks Live at Harry Caray’s” on WGN-AM 720 when Bolland referred to the Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel, as “sisters.”
Bolland was asked if the Sedins would still be sisters if they joined the Hawks.
“Well, they’ll never become Hawks,” Bolland said. “I don’t think we’d let them on our team. We’d be sure not to let them on our team. And, yeah, they probably still would be sisters. I think they might sleep in bunk beds. The older one has the bottom one, the younger one got the top.”
On Wednesday in Vancouver after the audio went viral, Vigneault responded.

Canucks Follow the Leader As Kesler’s Play Improves

from Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun,
It’s like that scene from the movie Jerry Maguire, when Jerry (Tom Cruise) says to Dorothy (Renee Zellweger), “you. . .you complete me.”
That’s kind of the way the Vancouver Canucks feel about Ryan Kesler.
He may not exactly complete them, but he sure makes them better when he is at the top of his game.
And if he’s not quite there, Kesler is certainly close.
