Jury Trial For Byfuglien

from Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press,
The boating charges against Winnipeg Jet defenceman Dustin Byfuglien will be decided by a jury.
Mitchell Robinson, the lawyer for the 27-year-old Byfuglien, met this morning with the judge and Hennepin County district attorneys in Minneapolis in a last-ditch chance to come to a resolution, but were unable to do so. As a result, the next step in the case – which stems from an incident last Aug. 31 on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota—will be to schedule it for a jury trial on July 23.
“We’ll pick a jury then and let a jury decide,” said Robinson Thursday when reached by the Free Press. “I’m not surprised. I mean, I’m always optimistic that we can settle these cases, but we’re still so far apart. The prosecutor sees this as a boating-under-the-influence case and I see it as a case of failing to have navigation lights on.
“We’re very far apart. We weren’t able to reach any kind of a fair settlement, so the next step is trial and we’ll see what a jury thinks.”

“Again… a wide-open game by both sides. That’s going to kill you at this time of year. This hockey is not going to take you to the playoffs. Even if we make it, if we’re going to play like that everybody’s going to kill us.
“A lot of turnovers, there’s got to be more responsibility there. You tie the game with three minutes left and everybody’s so excited at a time when you need every point and then they score like 10 seconds later.
“It wasn’t just about that one, there were a lot of turnovers all game long. I don’t know… I don’t know any more. We’ve lost so many games like that this year. At the end of the day, it’s our fault. At the end of the day if we’re not going to make it we can look in the mirror and say, ‘It’s our fault.’ It’s nobody else.”

Can you say control the puck and find the open man?
The Sens did defeat the Jets, probably putting and end to Winnipeg’s chances for the playoffs.

Just The Facts From Games Played Last Night

from Elias Sports Bureau at ESPN,
• The Jets overcame a 3-0 deficit to record a 4-3 overtime victory against the Capitals in Washington. It was the fifth time in Thrashers/Jets franchise history that they won a road game in which they trailed by three goals. The four previous instances came when the team was located in Atlanta, with the most recent of those comeback wins coming against the Flyers in Philadelphia on March 12, 2011.
• Drew Stafford scored two goals in the Sabres’ 4-1 win over the Rangers in New York. Stafford has only two multiple-goal games this season and they’ve both come at Madison Square Garden. He scored both Buffalo goals in the Sabres’ 3-2 loss at MSG on Feb. 25. Stafford is only the second player in Sabres history with two multi-goal games in one season at the “World’s Most Famous Arena.” Rick Martin had a pair of two-goal games at the Garden for Buffalo in 1974-75.

Caps Are Stunned With 4-3 OT Loss

from Katie Carrera of the Washington Post,
The defeat wasn’t only shocking because it marked the first time this season that Washington had coughed up a three-goal lead and its first loss in 23 games in which it had entered the third period with a lead. It was stunning for its timing: With only seven games remaining in the regular season, the Capitals, who are clinging to the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference by virtue of tiebreakers, need points as much as Winnipeg.
“It cost us huge two points. We get one, but we needed two,” winger Alex Ovechkin said. “It’s stupid play by us. We just totally stopped playing after [the Jets] score [their] first goal.”
Washington (37-30-8) remained in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 82 points, tied with Buffalo, which defeated the conference-leading New York Rangers, 4-1, on Friday. Winnipeg (35-31-8), in 10th place with 78 points and a game in hand on both the Capitals and Sabres, stayed in the hunt thanks to the pair of points it picked up in Chinatown.

Game Of The Night
by Paul on 03/23/12 at 02:35 PM ET

Only two Western Conference teams play tonight (Edmonton and Columbus) so attention is on the Eastern Conference.
from Katie Carrera of Capitals Insider,
Of the Capitals’ remaining eight regular season games, two over the next five days will hold significant sway over how the future unfolds.
On Friday night Washington hosts Winnipeg, which sits five points behind in 10th place. A win over the Jets, who will have eight games remaining after the contest, would go a long way toward extinguishing the possibility of the Southeast Division foe catching the Capitals in the standings.
After the 2-1 overtime loss to the Flyers, Alex Ovechkin summed up the importance of the next contest succinctly. Friday “is certainly a big game for us,” he said. “Probably the biggest game of the year.”
One that could be even more crucial is a matchup with the Sabres next Tuesday. Buffalo is only one point behind the Capitals and sits in ninth place, still very much alive in the hunt for the postseason. The Sabres face the New York Rangers on Friday and then Minnesota on Saturday before visiting Verizon Center that day.

“If you didn’t have a chance we wouldn’t come here. You wouldn’t play the game. There’s always a way to win games. We are just as able to win this game as they are.
“We know the challenges. They’re at home, they’ve done very well lately. So bring it on.”
