NEW YORK (October 27, 2011) – The Pittsburgh Penguins® have used Draft Day expertise to build two generations of championship teams, one of the NHL’s most passionate fan bases and one of North America’s most robust youth hockey communities. In June, all those elements will be on display when the Penguins and the City of Pittsburgh host the 2012 NHL Draft™ at the CONSOL Energy Center.
The 2012 NHL Draft will be held over two days. Round One, on Friday, June 22, will begin at 7:00 p.m. ET, and Rounds 2-7 will be conducted on Saturday, June 23, starting at 10:00 a.m. ET.
“The NHL is extremely pleased to be able to host this outstanding event in an outstanding city and venue—CONSOL Energy Center,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. “The Penguins and the City of Pittsburgh have hosted many terrific NHL events, including last year’s Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic®, and I have no doubt this will be another exciting endeavor. Young players seem better-prepared than ever to take prominent roles on their new teams, and the Draft offers the opportunity for our fans everywhere to watch our prospects take the next dramatic step toward their NHL careers.”

A very strange way of informing the hockey world that Pittsburgh’s hosting the 2012 Entry Draft
by George Malik on 08/06/11 at 11:40 AM ET

We all know the drill by now. The NHL doesn’t award franchises or cities marquee events like the NHL Entry Draft or the All-Star Game based upon any sense of balance. Instead, the NHL’s criteria for awarding said events involves the following: 1. Build a new rink, and we will come; 2. Stabilize your ownership situation and/or stave off franchise insolvency, and we’ll give you a wink; 3. Stand by the commissioner during a difficult business situation and you’ll receive some reciprocal back-scratching. The Pittsburgh Penguins apparently fit at least two of those three categories, and as such, they’re likely to host the 2012 Entry Draft at the Consol Energy Center…but the Hockey News’s Ryan Kennedy reports that the reasoning for said assumption involves something…well, furry…
The bumping up of a major niche convention in Pittsburgh lends credence to widespread rumors the city will host the 2012 NHL Draft.
The Penguins are known to be interested in hosting the draft, which would be held at the recently opened Consol Energy Center, but team has also stated it plans to hold a number of other events in the preceeding week if given the opportunity. Because of the expansive nature of the planned festivities, the city required the use of its convention center, which had already been booked for the June 21 to 24 by Anthrocon, an annual gathering of Furries.

More to the Draft Than the Draft Picks

From Craig Custance at Sporting News:
But the best part of the draft is the wheeling and dealing that happens when 30 NHL general managers gather in the same city. Last year, trade rumors surrounded eventual Conn Smythe winner Tim Thomas and Vancouver sent a huge package to Florida for Keith Ballard. Two years ago, Anaheim shipped Chris Pronger to the Flyers in a trade that catapulted the Flyers into Stanley Cup contention.
This weekend will be no different. Here’s what to look for this weekend in Minnesota beyond the draft picks:

From the Calgary Herald:
Investigators have laid criminal charges against a Western Hockey League player involved in a fatal crash west of Calgary.
The 17-year-old player, whose identity is protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and refusing to provide a breath sample. [...]
The Youth Criminal Justice Act also prevents publishing details of the team the accused played for, but he was widely expected to be selected in the early rounds of the NHL entry draft later this month.

NHL Draft Drawing April 12
by Alanah McGinley on 04/08/11 at 03:13 PM ET

NEW YORK/TORONTO – The National Hockey League Draft Drawing, a weighted system to determine the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, will take place Tuesday, April 12, at 8 p.m. ET.
The League, in cooperation with TSN, will unveil the results of the Draft Drawing live during a 30-minute program, produced and televised by TSN in Canada. The special presentation will also be simulcast on VERSUS.
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly will be live in TSN’s studio to reveal the order of selection for the top picks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The Draft Drawing involves clubs that do not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, or the clubs that acquired the first-round drafting positions of those non-playoff clubs.
Per NHL rules, the club selected in the Draft Drawing may not move up more than four positions in the draft order. Thus, the only clubs with the opportunity to receive the first overall selection are the five teams with the lowest regular-season point totals, or the clubs that acquired an eligible club’s first-round draft pick. No club will move down more than one position as a result of the Draft Drawing.
