Friedman: Golisano’s Scouting Cuts Hurt Buffalo’s Chances

From Elliotte Friedman at CBC.ca:

While researching how different organizations approached scouting, several other teams ripped Buffalo’s approach. At the time, Golisano considered that self-serving, because those people stood to lose their jobs if “The Sabre Way” caught on. But, what interested me most was a common thread throughout many of those conversations. It went like this: “I’ll explain to you why video scouting is a bad idea. But, I’m not going to rip Darcy because he’s at the mercy of his owner.”

In the interview, Golisano didn’t exactly disprove that theory.

“These scouts are traveling all over the world. All these expenses, could they accomplish a lot more staying in one place with the use of video?” the owner said. “And they believe they can. If somebody interprets that as not being progressive and being regressive, that’s too bad. But we think we’re far more efficient and have a much better scouting organization than we did three years ago.”

From the Miami Herald’s George Richards:

With the type of season the Florida Panthers went through last year, coach Pete DeBoer said one would have to expect plenty of changes.

Flames GM has Shown Draft-Day Guile in the Past

From the Calgary Herald’s Scott Cruickshank:

OK, what would you do?

Your team has zero selections in the first two rounds of this week’s National Hockey League draft in Los Angeles.

Your team was the third oldest, and the most senior of the non-playoff outfits.

Your team produced the fewest goals in the entire league.

Bruins Chiarelli in Critical Week

From the Boston Herald’s Steve Conroy:

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli just might be entering the most important week of his career.

With four picks among the first 45 selections in this weekend’s NHL draft in Los Angeles, Chiarelli has the opportunity not only to fortify the future but also do some wheeling and dealing to get his stuck-in-the-second-round club over the hump.

And you can bet Chiarelli has been and will be hoping to get something, and perhaps something gargantuan, done.

Wild and Crazy Guy Brent Flahr Working on Wild’s Draft

From the Minneapolis Star-Tribune’s Michael Russo:

Brent Flahr seems like a quiet, innocent, unsuspecting guy, but when you work with him, you learn awfully fast to never turn your back.

Take Shep Harder, the Wild’s director of hockey administration. He’s allergic to mayonnaise, so during a recent meeting, when Harder asked for “no mayo” on a sandwich, Flahr made sure it had extra mayo.

Luckily, Flahr didn’t kill Harder. But it made for a lot of laughs when Harder ran out minutes later with indigestion.
