10 Ways to Improve the NHL

From David Newland at The Canoe Dossier,
I want to see the NHL succeed. It’s a grand tradition and was once a great game. But as a lifelong fan, I feel like I’ve never been consulted on what would make the game great again. So I’m offering my two cents’ worth anyway, and I hope you’ll do the same.
1. Management must love the game more than the money.
I think we can call that first idea “unintended humor.” Other ideas on the list might be more feasible, however. Matters for debate, anyway—check it out.

I just read your article and realized that there’s maybe…you know…a reason you were never consulted.
He wants them to stop changing the rules, except for the rules he wants implemented. Return to the old style of hockey, oh but without the hooking and holding. Favor franchises in “real” hockey markets? Like Quebec? Management needs to love the game more than money, but lets take away the arena naming rights, television contracts, playoff lengths, and anything else that’s going to make it harder for them to focus on the game rather than the money. Jesus…this guy took some basically good ideas and deep fried them in stupid.
I hope, for his sake, nobody comes up with a 10-step list for improving sports journalism.

Talk about a list of unrealistic and unreasonable suggestions…It would be nice to dwell in the real world…other than a couple of sensible ones (back to wooden sticks, accept the international nature of the game)this is ridiculous. And, isn’t Mellon Arena named after the Mellon Bank, no matter who Mr. Mellon was?

Hockey should be played in May and June…otherwise, what am I going to watch? Wearing out successful teams gives less successful teams a chance take advantage of that perceived “weakness” the next year. Everything worth working for is worth working HARD for.
Either way, I somewhat agree with #4. There are a few teams that need to be moved. But, if he wants his #1 point to be true, they’ll leave the teams where they are (even if they are losing money) and try to support the game and make an untraditional hockey market INTO a hockey market. Look at Dallas, San Jose, Anaheim, Colorado, Carolina. The fan support in those cities is remarkable. But moving teams that are losing money in a non traditional hockey markets after everything has been tried is a feasible and financially good decision. I may be biased because I just want my Winnipeg team back…lol.

You know, hockey is the only sport where every week there’s an article about how there’s something wrong with it. I love hockey. And, it might not be perfect, but maybe, just maybe, we’re doing more harm by criticizing it so much. Besides, half of these criticisms are true of most of the other “top” sports.
