8 Worst NHL Trades Ever

From Ted Montgomery at USA Today,
As we draw nearer to the NHL trade deadline (Feb. 26), let’s take a few moments to look back at some of the dumbest, most ill-advised trades ever consummated between two NHL teams. These aren’t the only bad trades ever made, but they are certainly among the worst.
To borrow an adage from another sport, any free-swinging baseball slugger will tell you that two extreme outcomes can happen when you take that big swing at a pitch: You can hit a home run, or you can look silly corkscrewing yourself into the ground after completely whiffing. That’s what happened in the following big NHL trades. (Keep in mind, however, that every foolhardy trade on this list made the opposite team’s brass look absolutely brilliant.)

From the article regarding the Brett Hull trade:
On the surface, this trade at the time did not seem so one-sided. It’s only when you apply retrospect to it that it begins to seem ridiculous. The Flames won a cup soon after this trade was made
And isn’t that the ultimate goal? Both Wamsley and Ramage played an important role (okay, Wamsley not so much in the playoffs) during the ‘89 season that resulted in the hoisting of Lord Stanley’s mug. Remind me how deep the Blues went in the playoffs when Hull was there?
A much worse Flames trade was the 10-player trade between Calgary and Toronto, the main players being Doug Gilmour and Gary Leeman.

Dash_Pinched, well said. I thought the exact same thing when I read the article. There’s no doubt that Hull was a better player, but the Flames got what they needed for that season and playoff, and it paid off. And looking at the teams the Flames had during Hull’s career, even if they’d kept him around they wouldn’t have been a whole lot better (arguably worse, in some ways). So, they made the right move and got a Stanley Cup.

Hodge for Middleton.
Bertuzzi for Luongo.
Kurvers for the Niedermeyer pick.
Yashin for Chara and Spezza pick.
Thibault et al for Roy and Keane.
Linden for McCabe and Bertuzzi.
Few worse off the top of my head and some from the list weren’t nearly as lopsided as made out to be.

The Hull deal is more equivalent to the Iginla for Nieuwendyk trade for the Flames in reverse.

He didn’t say Roy had anything to do with it. They got Thibault in the Lindros deal, then years later spun him with other stuff for Roy. That’s what he said. I agree on the Chara/Spezza pick deal, it would be worse if Ottawa traded Chara and not lost him as a free agent. Still pretty bad though.

Bertuzzi Louongo is missing!
Also, I think a whole list can be done just on the top 10 worst New York Islander trades.

Milbury traded Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha.
As if I need to say more than that… what makes this so bad is not just the trade itself, but the opportunity that got away as a result of it.
Milbury passed on Dany Heatley and Marian Gaborik in the 2000 Amateur Draft. The crazy thing is that Milbury could have taken either sniper and still got DiPietro with the Islanders’ holding the #5 overall pick. DiPietro was rated 7th on all scouting reports. Worse, the teams drafting 4 and 5 had just given long term contracts to young goalies, so neither was in the market for a goalie.

Adam Oates was a big loss for the Wings, but losing Paul MacLean’s moustache was an unpardonable error. Those things don’t grow on trees…

Just so Ted Montgomery knows, Partick Roy had nothing to do with the Eric Lindros trade.
