A Dying Breed

from Ted Wyman of the Winnipeg Sun,

We come to you today to express concern for an endangered species.

We are talking about the Winnipeg Jet, a creature once beloved and abundant in these parts.

Now, 12 years after the local NHL team became extinct (or at least packed up and flew south to Phoenix) they are truly a dying breed.

With the retirement of former Jet Stu Barnes Thursday, a month after Dallas Drake did the same thing, there are now only seven ex-Jets with the potential of playing in the NHL this coming season.

Is it impressive that I came up with all 7 after just two minutes of brainstorming, or sad?

I can also remember what brand of helmet about 80% of NHLers wear, and whether they wear a visor (and whether it’s tinted). Yes, I am a hockey nerd.

Um, Tkachuk, Numminen, Selanne, Khabibulin, uh, Draper, um…Doan…Kilger, really?  Huh, forgot about that.  Tverdovsky and Igor Korolev are still playing in Russia…

I miss the Jets.  I always will.  I hope that, one day, an ownership group that’s willing to take some day-to-day operational losses in exchange for massive increases in franchise equity decides to put a team back in Friendly Manitoba, but that’s a ways off.  Till then, I think I need to invest in a Thomas Steen jersey…

George -

It’s easy to forget Kilger, he’s been with so many teams.

This is why you should always fire up your old SEGA NHL games and play as the Jets, just to walk down memory lane…

A more-interesting question (to me) is how many Nordiques are left in the NHL now?
