A Great Way To Close Yankee Stadium

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Although nothing is official, the momentum to play Winter Classic II in New York, preferably at Yankee Stadium, live on NBC, on New Year’s Day 2009 is growing, with NHL quietly exploring the possibility by conducting a feasibility study to discuss the pros and cons of the venture.
Even though outdoor games can be risky, expensive and bothersome to stage, there is a growing sentiment in the league to schedule one every year for the foreseeable future, preferably on New Year’s Day, to take advantage of its potential as a made-for-TV event.

I really think should look at playing this on a different day. This year’s game was criticized for being on New Year’s Day. With all the college football, it was forgotten about.
The ratings don’t support your view, it was highly, highly successful.

I agree. The ratings I saw had it way higher than expected.
Not agreeing that the last game played at Yankee Stadium is a hockey game but whatever.

Because of the way the BCS games have moved the top bowl games away form New Year’s Day there actually is a decent spot for this game. My beef is more with the idea that there are too many teams who couldn’t host a winter classic themselves, therefore they should be the opponents for these cold weather teams. Instead of pitting two cold weather teams together why not try to use one of the CA or FL teams? What about Carolina or Nashville or the Stars? Instead it will always be the Rangers, the Crosbys, the Bruins, Philly, etc. the few teams the league cares about showcasing. When you have a league with so many great teams and so many great players and you consistently promote the same 5-7 teams it gives the casual fan the impression that the league is thin when the opposite is actually true. If the game has to feature the Rangers why not try to involve the western conference champs or Stanley Cup champs? Oh that’s right, there’s no guarantee those teams would be scheduled to play each other next year.

There was an article in the New York Times today about this - and the multi-use history of Yankee Stadium in general.

Yep Baroque, and anyone want to try to guess the last event held at Tiger Stadium?

Aaron:
I’m guessing that one reason the game would be less likely to involve a longer-distance matchup is that a game between two teams that are closer together would be easier to reschedule if the field gets turned into slush by a January thaw.
I hope the league has a contingency plan for if the game absolutely can’t happen at all, just in case. If they keep playing these things, sooner or later it’s going to happen.
