A little more light shed on the Desjardins-Ramo trade

Many Habs fans were left confused on Monday night when the Canadiens traded Cedrick Desjardins, arguably the best goalie in their system after Carey Price, to Tampa Bay for Karri Ramo, a goaltender who has not succeeded in previous NHL stints and is currently committed to Omsk of the KHL.
Well, now we have an answer as to why the deal was made.
Sort of.
In an interview with CKAC, a prominent Montreal radio station, Desjardins confirmed that he had been very disappointed after Curtis Sanford was re-signed, and even more so by the signing of free agent Alex Auld. Desjardins then spoke to general manager Pierre Gauthier and made it clear he would appreciate a chance to play elsewhere as he clearly wasn’t going to have a chance in Montreal. In other words, he indirectly asked for a trade.
“J’ai été déçu moi aussi d’une certaine manière quand ils ont signé Auld et Sanford. Ils ont pris carrément une autre approche étant donné qu’ils veulent un vétéran pour Carey Price. C’est de valeur parce que ça aurait été une fierté pour moi de jouer à Montréal. Je ne peux pas contrôler ça.”
“À 25 ans, tu es rendu à vouloir ta chance immédiatement. Eux ne pouvaient pas me la donner à court terme.”

Enter Tampa Bay, Desjardins’ former coach and new Lightning head coach Guy Boucher, and a very active general manager in Steve Yzerman, and it is fair to presume that Boucher asked Yzerman to acquire Desjardins based on his performance last year for the Hamilton Bulldogs.
So there you have it, Habs fans: a reason.
Sort of.
Does this change my opinion of the trade? No. It was a poor trade to make, and I am still confused as to why Gauthier would sacrifice a promising young asset such as Desjardins.
But you know what? He worked really hard for the Bulldogs and the Canadiens clearly weren’t going to give him a fair shot at the backup role. So good luck Cedrick, I hope you get a chance down south.

Gauthier’s track record in Anaheim was less than stellar, his actions this offseason confirm he hasn’t improved much.

Given that Yzerman has the Bulldog’s former GM as his assistant GM, and the Bulldog’s former coach as his head coach, it really shouldn’t be all that difficult to put together how this went down.

Could this also have been a bit of a “screw you kid” by Gauthier? I mean as far as I can tell Desjardins has a slightly less of a chance getting time in the net in Tampa than he would have had this season in MTL.
Tbay has Smith, Ellis, Tokarsky and now Desijardins….where as CURRENTLY in MTL there’s Auld and then Sanford and ?Meyer? in the minors….sure the MTL goalie depth will change with Price signing -at some point - but with Desjardins’ play from last season at some point this year I think he would have had the ability to jump Sanford as the NHL call up.

Not sure why Desjardins would be surprised *now*. As I’ve said before, they’ve never given him a chance up with the big club in what, 4 years now as a pro? If they’d thought enough of him, they’d at least have given him a game or two just to see. That’s not at all unusual.
