from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
If the Minnesota Wild don’t want to give winger Marian Gaborik more than Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin ($8.7 million a year) in a seven- or eight-year extension, they could always consider trading a star for a star.
Here’s one wildcat trade possibility: Gaborik to Pittsburgh for Malkin because the Penguins are very weak on the wing.
That would be akin to Dany Heatley for Marian Hossa, pretty rare stuff in this league where quality usually gets dealt for quantity.

I was unaware that “wildcat” was a term that meant “the GMs of the teams involved must both be on crack to do this.”
If Malkin were disgruntled and wanted out and would pull a Terrell Owens-level hissy fit if he weren’t traded - otherwise, no freakin’ way.

after seeing hossa go to free agency, i don’t think pittsburgh will ever trade good players again for a possible rental. on top of that, i think malkin is a better player than gaborik. now, say, jordan staal and kris letang for a gaborik (who is under a long term contract).... possibly.

That doesn’t begin to make sense. I can see a trade for Staal, but Malkin is already signed to a deal cheaper than what Gaborik would get as an UFA. And that isn’t necessary if Staal pans out at wing.

HAAA. NO way. The Pens are gonna trade a 22-year-old that has already been incredible well before his prime for an injury-prone 26-year-old?
