from Phil Sheridan of the Philadelphia Inquirer,
These Flyers had the worst season in their history a year ago. Now they are in the final four. They had the worst record in the NHL a year ago. Now they have knocked off the No. 1 seed to advance to the Eastern Conference finals.
“Last year?” said R.J. Umberger, who scored two goals last night and a stunning total of eight in the five-game series. “We almost didn’t make the playoffs this year. We had to fight at the end of the season to get in.”
What’s the French for destiny?

The 2001 Colorado Avalanche, when Forsberg scored 27 points in 20 games after missing the entire regular season to help the Avalanche win the first and only Stanley Cup of Ray Bourque’s career.
The year Forsberg scored 27 points in 20 games after missing the regular season,. the Avs only made the conference finals, which made it even more amazing that he led the playoffs in points, that was in 2002. His spleen burst in round 2 or 3 in ‘01 and he didn’t play in the final.

I think most people don’t actually believe the Stanley Cup is awarded each year by destiny, but there are some times you can call the winner a “team of destiny” and not be laughed out of the room. The 1991 Pittsburgh Penguins, who played through back pain after a surgery made him miss over half the season. The 1993 Montreal Canadiens, unbelievably led by rookie goaltender Patrick Roy to the Stanley Cup. The 1998 Red Wings, when Steve Yzerman handed the cup to Vladimir Konstantinov in his wheelchair. The 2001 Colorado Avalanche, when Forsberg scored 27 points in 20 games after missing the entire regular season to help the Avalanche win the first and only Stanley Cup of Ray Bourque’s career.
The 2008 Philadelphia Flyers? Nope. You still get laughed out of the room when you suggest they’re a “team of destiny”.
