RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired defenseman Aaron Ward from the Boston Bruins in exchange for forward Patrick Eaves and a fourth-round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
“With this trade, our defense really takes shape,” said Rutherford. “Aaron played very well during his time in Carolina and had maintained that consistency with New York and Boston. We envision him complementing Joni Pitkanen well as a defensive pairing.”

There is something wrong in a world where a team trading for Aaron ward gets the better end of the bargain.

The Bruins will buy-out Eaves if he is not picked-up on waivers.

Good move by Boston…...they can sign Kessel now plus they need get more mobility on their D. Ward was solid but with Chara and Wideman they need some more speed back there. Ward was the odd man out…........

I think the Bruins are still over the cap withe the trade. So I don’t know how much this will help in signing Kessel?
According to” Hockeybuzz” the Bruins cap # is $58,079,167. That’s $1,279,167 over. Ward is making $2.5m, Eaves is making $1.4m, That’s a difference of $1.1m. That’s still over by just a bit. Even if they buyout Eaves that still not enough for Kessel. Not to mention now they’ll be looking for another d-man. I think Kessel is a goner.

I think this is a trade that helps both teams. B’s need the salary off the books, Canes need any solid d-man. Ward isn’t great, but he’ll compliment a guy like Pitkanen real nice and give you 15 solid minutes per night.

Terrible trade for Boston. Eaves was a hot item 4 years ago… since then he hasn’t even cracked 10 goals in 70+ game seasons. This is a pure salary dump, and I’m disappointed that Chiarelli couldn’t find a better trading partner.
But hey… at least we keep Kessel.
