Accept What We Are

from Ted Montgomery at USA TODAY,
You’ve all read countless articles about how the NHL can improve its profile, how savvier marketing can elevate the league to new heights in the public’s consciousness. I’ve even written a few columns like that myself. And I believed what I wrote in those columns. I really did.
But I’ve changed my tune. I’m now resigned to the notion that the NHL will probably never be more popular than it is right now, today. And I think we, as die hard hockey fans, would be better served to accept this fact rather than striving to attain what is clearly now an unachievable pipe dream.

Totally agree with Kevin. Wings fans, for one, don’t really give two shits if the NHL is “as popular” as football, baseball, basketball, golf, or NASCAR- at least not beyond lamenting Detroit media’s inexplicable, perennial decision to ignore the Wings until January in lieu of debating all the reasons for the suckitude that is the Detroit Lions.
The NHL is just popular enough for real hockey fans, and always has been.

Funny. Seems like most fans have long had few problems with hockey being less popular than other sports. Most of the crying, whining and griping comes from members of the media.

The real shame of it is that most non-fans don’t understand all the fun and excitement they’re missing. Oh well, their loss.

Man, I hate reading drivel like this. The NHL has been around since 1920…it’s not going anywhere. I didn’t know hockey was competing with the NFL or MLB or the NBA. NFL plays one game per week for three months. MLB plays in the summer. The NBA’s attendance numbers are the same as the NHL….always have been.. Yes..more people play/watch basketball. That probably has alot more to do with the weather than the sport. Give up trying to compare apples and oranges…please
