Looking ahead, if the Atlanta Thrashers don’t sign Ilya Kovalchuk by next summer, the KHL probably would offer to make him the highest-paid player on the planet.

Right now the KHL is inflicting pin pricks on the NHL, but if they ever landed a prime player such as Kovalchuk, it could turn the league into a foreign version of the World Hockey Association.

Kovalchuk absolutely gushed about the KHL to Sport-Express recently, thus the rumor fodder.

It’s important to note that the WHA ultimately failed.  As did the old IHL once it tried to take on the NHL.

One does not reap success from taking on the NHL.  The only reason the KHL currently exists is that the NHL allows it to, basically.  If it came right down to it, you’d better believe the NHL would start tweaking some rules and regs and put the kabosh on the KHL.  Right now the KHL is swiping little parts here and there, and the NHL is okay with that.  Should they try to take too much though, the NHL is going to stomp it into oblivion.

I can definitely forsee the NHL instituting a “Larry Bird exception” in the near future if it’d hurt the KHL (and it would).
