“There’s huge progress going forward. The headaches decrease every day. My goal is to be at Detroit’s training camp which starts on September 12th.”
_Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja. More from George James Malik of SlapShots at Mlive.

The Wings only have $300k in cap space right now, so if Lilja is cleared to play, and the Wings want to keep him, it seems like they only have two options.
1. They could send him to GR and see if he clears waivers. If he does, he could play there until a D-man other than Lebda or Meech goes on LTIR, thereby clearing enough cap space for him to be called up.
2. They could trade someone who makes more than $1,000,000 plus Lebda in order to free up enough cap space to sign a minimum salary forward. Hmmm. I wonder if Williams has a no-trade clause. ![]()
Actually, neither of those options makes much sense from a “team” perspective. If Lilja is deemed fit to play, I think the Wings’ only viable option is to trade the big guy. But I doubt they could get much for him.

I don’t expect him to be deemed fit to play anytime soon. He’s still suffering from headaches on a daily basis, and he can’t even attempt to approach NHL-level conditioning until he’s completely symptom free. Unless a miracle happens, he’s not going to be ready to play at the start of the season.
