Afternoon Line

“We had (Brad) May in a couple of games in exhibition and no one got hacked or whacked or touched. We don’t have him and we get run. You get tired of watching that.

“Our guys do a real good job of competing hard, but we don’t have a team that twists off helmets at stoppages and when you start seeing it all the time, it’s just nice when you got someone to look after that stuff now.

“Tough guys always play tough, I got no problem with that. But the guys that aren’t tough, when they play against you and are tough, that drives me crazy. So we’ve seen enough of that.’’

-Detroit Coach Mike Babcock.  More from Ansar Khan of Mlive.

Strange. You’d almost think that, in the new NHL, it would be the refs’ job to stop that “helmet twisting at stoppages” sort of thing. But, apparently, things like roughing don’t count once the whistle blows. So a skilled team has to go out and fill one of its roster spots with a “tough guy” in order to keep their skilled players from getting mugged. Super.

The league doesn’t even know what it’s instigator rule means…so why does any of this surprise you?

I need some years of English classes to get the “tough tough tough” sentence.

I think it’s a good move. Some much needed grit and nastiness.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Here’s a random though. ‘08 the Pens had loads of offensive firepower, but no old grit (Roberts was a joke). In ‘09 all that firepower was with the Wings, but did we have veteran grit? Sure Malts and Drapes were there, but…it still goes. The Pens added Guerin…and well…everything, and I mean EVERYTHING else non-withstanding…the outcome was different.

Guilherme, I think years of English classes would hurt you when trying to understand that babble.

But, apparently, things like roughing don’t count once the whistle blows.

That’s why I was surprised by the Staubitz suspension.  Why is a body check worse than gloved punches to the head?

It doesn’t make a ton more sense when you speak English as your native language either, Guilherme.  That’s Babcock for you…

You guys are getting a class act.  I had the opportunity to meet him at a preseason game and he was very kind to me and my son.  He also brings grit, determination and a great work ethic.

To be honest, it sounds like some of you guys didn’t even get through high school english class.  All Babcock’s saying in that specific line is that he gets angry when the opposing “soft” players start playing “tough” (read dirty) because they think they can run over the Wings.  Not that difficult to understand smile
