Afternoon Line

Greg Hardy in his Power Rankings (sports related) at ESPN tries to be funny…

It looks like a senior staff member of Alberta’s health services was fired after arranging for members of the Calgary Flames and their families to skip ahead of thousands of other patient Canucks in order to receive their H1N1 shots. Meanwhile, Canadian drugmakers are still scrambling to develop a vaccine that will make watching an NHL game more enjoyable than suffering from swine flu.

Fail and I wonder if Hardy has even watched an NHL game lately?

Let’s add Damian Cox of the Spin to the afternoon line too,

Hilarious to hear Buzz Hargrove claim he quit because he wasn’t being allowed to do his job as NHLPA ombudsman. Folks, Hargrove was scheduled to be fired last night and simply beat the union to the punch. He was going to be fired because he tried to turn the job of ombudsman into emperor and made a fool out of himself. Next most laughable claim comes from departed suit Ian Penny who says Chris Chelios undermined him. Well what the heck did Penny do to Paul Kelly all those months?

If you are a fan of the Wings, or the Pens, or the Caps, or the Sharks, and maybe another 5 or 6 teams that play a moderately exciting brand of hockey… watching NHL games is fun.

For the majority of the league?  Not so much.  For the past two years I’ve had some form of NHL ‘Center Ice’ service.  I don’t this year, mostly because I was only watching maybe five or six teams.  I would rather not watch hockey than see an Atlanta-Florida tilt.  Or Columbus-Nashville.  And a bunch of other combinations.

Those games are slow, rugby scrum affairs that almost always center around getting the best player on either team the puck and hoping he does something amazing with it.  Seriously, get a watch and count the number of times you get two straight minutes of play without a whistle.  The higher scoring isn’t a function of great offensive play, it’s mostly a function of powerplays,  ‘garbage goals’, and individual efforts rather than dynamic team play.

No flow, little momentum, and a lot of mucking.  That’s the product out there for at least half of the franchises in the NHL.

HockeyinHD, you couldn’t be more wrong.  Some of these games are incredible.  There will always be boring games and always exciting games.

I agree.  Some of them are incredible.  The problem is that for a whole bunch of teams ‘some’ is a lot closer to 10% than it is to 100%.
