Afternoon Line

There was so many Stanley Cups in both those dressing rooms now looking back and there was just genuine, genuine hatred.  There were no guys meeting up for a beer the night before or winking hello to a guy during warmup.

“There were players on the Colorado team I had played with before and I just grew to hate them and they felt the same way, I’m sure.”

-Brendan Shanahan talking about 3/26/97.  More from Shanahan by Ryan Dixon of The Hockey News.

Darren McCarty tore after Lemieux, likely to the delight of everyone in hockey who wasn’t either Lemieux’s teammate or blood relative. (Come to think of it, I bet even a couple second cousins thought he had it coming.)

Priceless. I hope LePuke ends up as one of those former pro athletes that loses everything and ends up living under a freeway overpass.

I went back and checked out some of the old videos. The one thing that stood out was Coffey in ‘96. The man has to be the best skater ever if not the prettiest. The way he could cross over going backwards was so effortless and beautiful. It’s truely a thing to behold. He really stood out. And keep in mind in ‘96 he was 35 not 25.

If all you take away from that game is the skating ability of Coffey, you’re missing some of the best “stuff” the NHL will never see again.
Absolutely EPIC…. big goals, big hits, the rivalry of all rivalries. Skill guys playing with grit, grit guys scoring skilled goals… man I miss those games & so does the NHL.

@ MOWingsfan19

Maybe “one thing” was a bit of an overstatement. But all the goals, hits and especially the dirty plays has been rehashed over and over on the blogs and other medis outlets that I never really forgot about it. But how much Coffey was a better skater than most (save a couple, e.g. Federov) of his contemporaries, well that just remined me.

...man I miss those games & so does the NHL.

That’s how I feel about the Oiler’s of the 80’s.

I’ve always loved how Wings fans claimed that Lemieux “turtled” when the videos clearly show he was cold-cocked blindside by McCarty and dropped by the punch. Did he have it coming?  Sure.  But McCarty then takes the gutless route and beats him while he’s done and knocked senseless.  How soon the Detroit fans forget that in their very next meeting, Lemieux not only dropped his gloves with McCarty, but inititated it and did a damned good job of holding his own against a much more experienced fighter.

a) I’m not sure you understand what the term “blindside” means.

Cold-cocked?  For sure.  Blindside?  Ummmmmm, no.

b) I’m not sure you understand what the term “turtled” means.

See that point where they’re both on the ice and Lemieux curls up with his head tucked under his arms, resembling a turtle in his shell?

That’s turtling.

Lemieux was trying to sneak off the ice when everyone knew the sh!t was hitting the fan.  I also seem to remember Lemieux keeping his visor on when the rematch started.
