Afternoon Line

via Blue Notes at Newsday,

Asked what it would mean to go up 2-0 tonight, Renney said: “Everything. That’s why we’re gonna come out and play hard. We have to understand that continued patience and poise and the ability to weather the storm on the road is important. We did that the other night very well, all things considered. We want to do that again tonight and be more proactive with our own attack.”

Funny, because I think Renney gets fired if they lose the series.

Steve, Renney built the Rangers developmental program and their scouting program, modeling it after what he did with Hockey Canada. Hes brought the Rangers to 3 straight playoffs, after the Rangers went 9 years without anything. The Devils and Senators are the only other teams to make the playoffs since the lockout, and the Sens were a Carolina win away from also missing out from the playoffs.

The Rangers were really strong in the last playoffs, and were pretty much 7.7 seconds away from taking a commanding lead in the 2nd round and advancing to the conference finals.

Hes also great at managing players, he got them to buy into his system for the last two seasons.

The first year they backed into the playoffs and got swept. Last year they charged into the playoffs and swept the Thrashers. This year they also charged into the playoffs and have put themselves in great position (if things go as expected, the Rangers’ path to the finals is NJ-MTL-PIT, all teams which the Rangers played well against in the regular season).

Honestly, if you think Renney should be fired, then Sather should have been fired three times over. He had 4 years of failure before righting the ship. Renney has had no years of failure. They’ve done better every year.
