from Mike Brophy of the Hockey News,
Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero should be applauded for taking a chance on Marian Hossa at the trade deadline. Not only has Hossa been a solid contributor on offense, as most expected he would, he has also played a stellar defensive game. He is often the first forward back on the back check.
All of that said, I’m not certain I’d cough up $7 million a year to a guy I see as more of a complimentary player than one who can lead a team.
more NHL bits…

That Hossa, he’s always got nice things to say about everyone!

I believe Shero did a fine job grabbing Hossa at the deadline. He’s a great addition to their line up.

Shows you how much talent the Pens’ have that Hossa is even close be being considered a complimentary player by anyone that watches hockey.
Like NHLJeff said though, lots of RFA’s coming up. RFA’s that WILL get offer sheets (who wouldn’t offer Malking 10mil/yr.???). But do you want Hossa, or Staal. Personally, I like Hossa, but everyone has an opinion.

Malkin won’t get an offer sheet if he signs this summer. He still has 1 year left on his entry contract. The goal of the Penguins is to lock him up before he reaches RFA. I imagine the same will be true with Staal. It would be fantastic if Hossa was able to stay, but he’s not worth $7 mil. $5 probably, but I wouldn’t think he’d take that.

Well, it’s not like they’re going to re-sign him unless he takes a huge discount to stay with a winning club (which he likely won’t). They still need to lock up Fleury (RFA after this season)as well as Malkin and Staal (both RFAs after next season) to long term deals.
