Air Canada Sues Obama Administration

Air Canada, the country’s largest carrier, sued the Obama administration over a directive that bars the carrier from providing charter service to professional ice hockey and basketball teams.

In a letter dated Aug. 11, the U.S. Transportation Department directed Air Canada to cancel all of its season-long sports charters, citing concern about “cabotage,” or the prohibited carriage of passengers or cargo by a foreign airline solely between points in the U.S., according to the lawsuit filed in federal court in Washington.

With the National Hockey League season about to get under way, Air Canada said that the directive has caused “massive confusion and concern” among hockey teams.
