Alberta Rumors

from Mark Spector of Sportsnet,
So, here’s the rumour:
The Calgary Flames add Jay Bouwmeester, then flip Dion Phaneuf to Ottawa for Dany Heatley.
They lose some offence from the blue-line in the transaction, but bring in a local boy who scores 50 goals up front. And the salary cap hit in losing Phaneuf and gaining Heatley only costs GM Darryl Sutter $1 million.
Senators GM Bryan Murray gets the offensive defenceman he covets and can justifiably grant Heatley his trade request, and everyone is happy….
Meanwhile, 300 km up Highway 2, rumours persist that Edmonton GM Steve Tambellini is shopping one of his four offensive defenceman in an attempt to kickstart the rebuild in Edmonton.
We’re hearing Sheldon Souray to Los Angeles — where his children live with his ex-wife, a long distance relationship that Souray has found taxing through two seasons in Northern Alberta. The package coming back would include defenceman Jack Johnson, and we’re guessing a forward with some grit, like a Wayne Simmonds.

i expect better out of Spector.
that Oilers rumor has been shot down 10 fold by media people in the town, and the Flames/Sens trade makes no sense for the Senators. who plays LW next year in their top 6? Dion Phaneuf? they need some real forward dept in general with Commrie and Neil leaving - not just a top line winger.

The Phaneuf thing makes a LITTLE sense after Bouwmeester.
The Souray to LA thing makes NO sense whatsoever. Take about your pound of flesh…

Phaneuf is NOT being moved. Darryl loves him like a son and his junior coach Brent Sutter was hired. End. of. story.

Simmonds is highly unlikely to move this summer. Plays with heart (very rare in LA) and is a favourite of the marketing folks.

@ Death Metal Nightmare: This is a different Spector than who I think you’re thinking of. There’s another blogger named Lyle that goes by the nickname Spector, and he usually provides sober, realistic interpretations of trade rumors. This is a different guy.

Why does every canadian team get super wood for the true NHL crybaby (Heatley)? Go ahead! Sign 15 ego scorers and see where you’ll get! No-to the-where. Seriously…do these GMs even look at the gaps in their team and see what’s missing (ie grit)...guessing not. Well…if they want to sack the salary for a thousand years they should feel free to trade guys who probably care more about the team than Dany the dink ever will. He’s like theo fleury without the coke problem (that I know of).

apologies…forgot to mention Simmonds. He’s a solid player and all but he has no scoring touch. On better teams he’d be an ahl-er. Not knocking his will or effort, that’s just a fact. Needs to learn how to shoot.
