All About The Scouts

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,
With all due respect to Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin, the true real MVPs in the NHL these days are guys like Tim Burke in San Jose, or Jim Nill in Detroit or David Conte in New Jersey and others who shepherd scouting staffs on premium teams.
When the salary cap was introduced, the league was supposed to be about younger free agents moving from team to team.
Instead, it’s probably more about scouting and drafting than it has ever been.

I agree completely. Maybe when you hit the 4th and up rounds it would have hard to pick, and then your just guessing, but how hard is it to rate the top 30 players in a year???
“Oh look, lets’ draft the guy that has double the points of anyone else in his league.....hopefully our GM doesn’t trade him and last years pick for a 36 year old player that peaked last year.”
or “I hope we don’t trade our first round pick of a goalie for a 2 year veteran goalie. Tell Mr. GM to NOT do that”. I don’t mean that Raycroft....best of luck to you playing for MODO.

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

You can draft a fleet of All-Stars, but if you don’t have patience and the organization to develop that talent like Detroit and New Jersey you can become the NY Islanders. It isn’t the scouts that fail, but the GM looking for a quick fix.
