from Edward Fraser of The Hockey News,
THN: Do you plan on making more moves before the season begins or is your roster set?
BL: We’ll probably make another move or two, but that’s not definite. It’s very difficult to get things done right now, very quiet. Most people have already signed their teams for the year and are ready for the season to start.
You have a lot of teams up against the cap; a lot of teams with one-way contracts. I feel a lot better about our position this year than I did last year.
THN: Was Mattias Ohlund the one guy who you had targeted from Day 1?
BL: We had three guys on our list that we really felt would be beneficial and we really felt like we needed to get one of them to get back on track to respectability.
Mattias was on that list, the other two, of course, were Scotty Niedermayer and (Jay) Bouwmeester.

It’s amazing how people in the game can have no idea what they are doing. This guy is a clown just like his bosses….Dan Boyle is a great Dman and they dumped him and went with Paul Ranger or whoever…and then they sign 50 yr old Mark Recchi for who knows what reason….and then there was the coach

To be fair to Lawton, we can’t know how much influence he had on the madness in Tampa last summer. The new owners (who, yes, do seem about as bright as a black hole) were keen to make a massive impact and instantly turn around the franchise; compare the first few months of the Lawton era to that of the Mike Gillis era in Vancouver and you can see the difference that having (fairly) sensible ownership can make.
Lawton has had more power recently though, and I don’t think Tampa did badly at the draft; they seem a lot stronger going forward now, with Vinny, Stamkos, Hedman and all their other young talent, than they did 18 months ago.
