from Craig Custance of the Sporting News,
I understand the risks that come with playing outdoors - the unpredictable weather, the horrible playing surface among other things. But the upside is too hard to overlook. It was a rare U.S. television ratings hit on NBC and I don’t think it’s a leap to think it helped give the sport momentum on the network when the playoffs rolled around.
I get the idea of trying to keep it special, but once a year is hardly overkill. I’m already excited about the prospect of covering this game as a working member of the media, even it means I have to type with mittens on.
The other interesting aspect about all of it is the matchup: Red Wings vs. Blackhawks. I think the only way the NHL could have done it better was to match up the Penguins and Red Wings in Pittsburgh or Detroit.
Wings fans, are you planning on attending? I am considering taking the Amtrak, so let’s all meet in the bar car!

I am planning on going if I can get tickets. The FAQ on the Blackhawks doesn’t seem to be friendly to the general public on ticket sales.

I disagree. Doing something like this yearly can easily lead to its losing its novelty and luster, especially if a couple of those Jan. 1s end up having bad weather conditions.

I like it as a yearly event, a new tradition as it were.
I’m definately going to try for some tickets. Hopefully sales per customer will be capped this year. I (like many others) tried to get tickets to last years winter classic minutes after they went on sale only to find it was sold out to ebay poachers.
We should definately get a KK group tailgate going!

Even if I can’t get a ticket to the game, I think I’ll head to Chicago to watch the game.

I’m considering it, yes. I can’t say I’m making plans for it, since 1 Jan 2008 was spent in a hospital room, but I’m definitely evaluating my options here.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to meet you in the bar car of an Amtrak train, unless that train is departing Atlanta.
